The Huron Small Business Enterprise Centre (HSBEC) will be holding its official grand opening as an enterprise centre in Seaforth, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. "We are inviting everyone to come out to our grand opening and see how we have changed," said Alison Lobb, manager of the HSBEC. Local dignitaries, including MP Paul Steckle, Huron -East Mayor Lin Steffler as well as Paul Homer, regional business consultant for the Ministry of Enterprise, Opportunity and Innovation, will be on hand to celebrate with HSBEC staff and to be a part of the ribbon cutting at 11:15 a.m. "As an enterprise, we are able to offer additional programs and additional funding from the ministry but our mandate will remain the same - to help small business owners," said Lobb. "We are at the same location with same staff and same partners. We just have more to offer." The HSBEC is a partnership between the Huron Business Development Corporation HBDC), the county and the Ministry of Enterprise, Opportunity and Innovation. Lobb said the small business support initiative recognizes the high rate of self- employment and small business development in the county. With micro -businesses (five employees or less) accounting for 88 per cent of the enterprises in the county and a failure rate of four businesses in five, the HSBEC offers programs and services to aid the development and increase the odds of success. "From evaluating an idea to developing a successful business plan, the HSBEC provides a one-stop source of business information for new entrepreneurs," said Lobb. She said the HSBEC is available to a broad range of entrepreneur, from retirees wanting to turn their hobby into a business, to students participating in the Summer Company Program which provides financial assistance to those interested in starting their own summer business. Lobb said one of the new program that will be offered at the HSBEC is legal and accounting mentoring for small business owners who have concerns. She said referrals through her may qualify to speak, free of charge to a lawyer or accountant. The centre will also feature more workshops than before said Lobb, such as Managing Your Employees on Nov. 5 and Your Bottom Line - Year End Tax Strategies on Nov. 26. Lobb said the open house will feature door prizes, draws and a chance to look through the centre and see how it has been refurbished to accommodate new resources. "I hope to see lots of visitors even if it's their first time here because I don't think many people realize how much resource material we have that is available to them," she said. Lobb said the walk-in resource area provides details on funding sources, business planning, market research, bookkeeping, licenses, regulations, statistics, demographics and many other aspects of small business management. Also during the day of the open house, in honour of HBDC's 10th anniversary and National Community Futures Development Corporations Day, a free business seminar will be held at the Seaforth Legion at 2 p.m. The seminar, Prospering in a Big Box Retail World, will be lead by Roy Prevost, retail expert, who will discuss how a small business can compete will Large corporations.
