Former Brussels principal seeks seat
on Avon Maitland school board
By Cheryl Heath
Clinton News -Record Editor
Paul Dyck is looking to give
something back to education.
Dyck, a Seaforth-area
resident, decided to toss his
hat into the ring for Huron
Central trustee of the Avon -
Maitland District School
Board after only one year of
retirement from it.
"I do have the background of
knowing the schools, first
hand," says Dyck, noting he
has taught at five different
schools within Huron County,
his last placement as principal
of Brussels Public School.
Dyck, a graduate of Central
Huron Secondary School, has
dedicated nearly 50 years to
Paul Dyck
public education.
"1 value it," he says. "I made
it my career."
Dyck believes he would be
an asset to the board because
of his background, experience
and knowledge.
He adds that being a retiree
allows him the time necessary
to do the job right.
"I regard it as almost a
volunteer position," he says,
adding he understands the
ramifications of the province's
controversial funding formula
and its effect on rural schools.
As examples, he notes per -
pupil and transportation
funding are in need of further
review.
"It has been a constant
challenge for the board," says
Dyck, adding school closures
are often the most severe
consequences for
communities.
Indeed, Dyck notes the
Brussels school was on the
accommodation review list
during his last year as
principal.
"It has a tremendous impact
on the whole school
community," he says. Even
the threat of closure impacts
staff morale, students and
parents, he adds.
As a former special
education teacher, Dyck says
he understands the value and
importance of both providing
tailored courses and receiving
the appropriate funding for
them.
Dyck is married to Flo, a
professional photographer.
The couple has three
university -educated children,
Caroline, Chris and Andrew.
Holmesville School activist running
for trustee of Avon Maitland board
By Cheryl Heath
Clinton News -Record Editor
Shelley Kaastra's name is
well known in the region
thanks to her tireless lobbying
to remove Holmesville Public
School's name from the Avon
Maitland District School
Board's contentious
accommodations review list.
Now Kaastra, a Holmesville
resident, is hoping Huron
Central -area residents will
cast their votes for her Nov.
10 as she seeks to take a seat
as school board trustee.
"There are a lot of concerns
and things that need to be
changed and dealt with both
at the board level and
Shelley Kaastra
government level," says
Kaastra, noting transportation
costs are a big concern.
Kaastra, who has been part
of delegations that have
addressed education leaders
Dr. Mordecai Rozanski and
Dr. Downey, believes the time
has come for the provincial
government to review its
policies.
For one thing, says Kaastra,
the Ministry of Education
does not have the correct
distances recorded for
tabulating transportation
costs. She says an example of
that is Londesboro is recorded
as .4 kilometres away from
Blyth.
Kaastra, who reports
missing only two board of
education meetings in two -
and -a -half years, says her
concerns encompass the
entire region.
"I believe I will be able to
work effectively with the
board," she says. "I have the
knowledge of what's
happening with the board."
She says as a trustee, she
will represent students and
parents on any issue that is a
concern.
Kaastra, who works as a
dining room supervisor and
on the family farm, is married
to Andrew. They have four
children, Toni, 13, Joel, 12,
Lucas, 9, and Jessica, 8. She
also volunteers for several
programs at Holmesville
Public School.

be a challenge to tray a
different avenue of the
education system."
Colquhoun says issues
affecting children have
always been a concern in her
family. She notes the recent
election of the Liberal Party
bodes well for the future of
education in Ontario.
"A funding formula change
is promised," she says. "I'd
like to work with that
change."
Colquhoun says as trustee,
who would hold herself
accountable to work towards
improving the learning
environment for students.
She says as a trustee it is
important to work within the
system and increase
resources and programs,
including ones for special
needs' children.
"With that, we would be
able to increase our EQAO
scores," she says in reference
to provincially mandated
standardized testing.
She says working with
students to improve scores is
one of her goals as trustee.
"It takes a village to raise a
child," says Colquhoun,
adding she hopes that she can
help both students and board
staff as a trustee.
Colquhoun is married to
Bill, a Central Huron
councilor. The couple has
two children, Matthew, 3,
and Johnathan, 4. Colquhoun

positions as vice -chairwoman
