Christmas used to be
handmade, back then
Back then they had a very different Christmas compared to us
now a days.
Back then they went around and sang Christmas carols rather
then listening to the songs on a CD or the radio. They also had
to grow their own tree because you couldn't go out and buy a
tree. So they planted one themselves. They used different
decorations too, they used candles instead of lights, popcorn on
string instead of tinsel, and handmade decorations.
Their toys were a lot different from ours too. They had
wooden toys instead of electronic toys like we get now
nowadays. They also got fruit in their stocking instead of candy
too.
They also had to have their own chicken or turkey because
they didn't have a grocery store close by where they could go
buy one. They used the turkey for the main course and had
plum pudding or mince meat pie for dessert.
It was a lot different back then compared to the Christmas
now.

Christmas wasn't
lavish in the old days
Christmas, a wonderful time of the year! We are lucky right now.
We have much more money compared to the old fashioned days.
Today we get expensive toys and clothes which are bought in a
store, but a long time ago people used to get just simple things like
wooden toys and homemade clothes. If they were good they would
usually get fruit in their stocking. If they were naughty, they would
get a piece of coal.
For their dinners they wouldn't have a fancy set-up like today. Of
course it was special, but they had animals that their father would
shoot, mincemeat pies, Christmas cake and plum pudding, all
made from scratch.
Even though it wasn't as lavish, they were still just as happy as
we are today. What a difference!

Snow angels cheer up
The time
Grandma met
Santa Claus
I was riding my bike over to my Grandma's house to get an
idea that I had to write for school.
"Hi, Grandma," I said while walking in the door of my
grandma's house.
"Hi," she said. "how's that story coming along?"
"Not very good, I don't know what to write about,"
"Why don't I tell you a story about what I call "An Old
Fashioned Christmas."
"Okay!" I said.
Grandma began: "Well, I was five years old at the time, a
little younger then you are. I was helping my mother prepare
for Christmas dinner. My relatives would be arriving this
Christmas Eve and stay for Christmas Eve.
Father and my brother Lewis were out feeding the animals,
and putting out bedding to keep the animals warm. When they
entered the house to warm themselves up, the table was already
set. My relatives began arriving by horse drawn carriage.
My brother, happy his chores were done asked me if I wanted
to go sledding but we weren't allowed. We had to spend time
with our visiting relatives.
Soon enough the Christmas tree was surrounded by
Christmas presents. "I can still remember all the presents I
received," grandma said.
I eagerly asked grandma "what did you get?"
I got a doll, a spinning top, and my favourite of all a new
dress, it was blue."
"But I thought you guys used to get barbies and computer
games and stuff like that," I said in a confused voice.
"Of course not," grandma said. "We never had enough
money, and also because nobody had ever thought of anything
like that yet."
"Oh, okay. What happened next?" I asked.
Grandma said, "It was past my bedtime, so I had to hurry to
bed. I had such a hard time falling asleep. It was about the
middle of the night and the house was very still, everyone had
retired to their beds, I lay awake. Then suddenly I heard some
kind of thumping on the roof. So I quietly got up to go see what
it was. I couldn't believe my eyes! The man I had only dreamed
of was eating the cookies I had left on the table. It was actually
Santa. I hurried back upstairs. Sleep was not going to come
very easily. My mind was racirtg...I was thinking about Santa
Claus."
I must have eventually fallen asleep because, before I knew it,
it was Christmas morning. I raced down the stairs. I was first to
wake."
"Finally, an hour later, my brother woke up. I was bursting
with excitement, to tell him my news so, I just blurted the
whole thing out. He was really surprised except he was
disappointed because I didn't wake him up."
"When mother and father woke, we asked if we could go
sledding because we got a new sled and there was also a big
snow hill my father had created for us.
After a long morning of sledding my brother and I ran inside,
knowing there would be a cup of hot chocolate just waiting for
us. At the end of the day, my relatives were packed and ready
to leave for home.
Grandma said, "that was the most memorable Christmas I
ever had!"
"Thanks for telling me that story, I'd better go before my
ideas leave my head!" I said.
Grandma said, "Before you go, I want you to know that when
I had my Christmas at your age we didn't have much, but we
had what really makes a good Christmas! Family to share it
with!"
And I am happy to still have family to share Christmas and
memories with.
I left Grandma's house, excited for Christmas that was only
weeks away!

Christmas means to me
making a snowman in the
cold wind of the cheerful
season then hiding from the

one team wins, we all run to
untouched snow to make
snow angels to cheer the
