Significant gains made compared
to last year's Grade 3, and 6 testing

The Avon Maitland
District School Board has
made significant gains over
last year's Grade 3 and
Grade 6 Reading, Writing
and Math results including
increases across the board
bringing them closer to
provincial averages. Huron
Perth's Catholic School
Board scored above
provincial averages in all
areas.
"Early in the year 2000 the
Avon Maitland District
School Board established as
its number one goal,
improving student
achievement. This renewed
commitment focused on the
Boards' early literacy
development, in particular at
the primary grades. Based on
the latest Grade 3'and Grade
6 EQAO (Education Quality
and Accountability Office)
test results, the effort is
paying off for Avon
Maitland students,"
according to a press release
from the school board.
The EQAO developed the
assessment and it provides
schools and boards with a
snapshot of information
about students at the end the
primary and junior divisions
from which to plan for future
programming. All Grade 3
and Grade 6 stiklents in
Ontario were assessed last
May in reading, writing, and
mathematics.
Assessment was based on
a five'day integrated unit of
study. This was the EQAO's
fifth year of this type of
assessment for Grade 3
students and the third year
for Grade 6 students.
The largest area of
improvement was Grade 3
Mathematics test results,
where 58 per cent of
students, seven per cent
more than the year before
reached the provincial
standard or higher.
Grade 3 results in the
2000-2001 school year
showed a remarkable
improvement in all the
EQAO test categories of
reading, writing, and
mathematics over the
previous year. I n
reading, the board's Grade 3
results improved five
percentage points with 44
per cent reaching the
provincial standard or above.
The difference between the
board and the provincial
average has been narrowed
by four percentage points.
In writing, 46 per cent of
the board's Grade 3 students
reached the provincial
standard or above compared
to 44 per cent the year
before. The gap between the
board and the provincial
average narrowed by two
percent.
Reading and writing
improvements were also
achieved at the Grade 6
level, however, mathematic
achievement wasn't as
significant as the Grade 3
students.
Grade 6 students improved
three percentage points in
reading, jumping three
percentage points to 47 per
cent at the provincial
standard or higher. In writing
students improved by four
percentage points to 47 per
cent achieving the provincial
standard or better.
Mathematic improvement
in Grade 6 increased by only
one per cent with 49 per cent
of students now reaching the
provincial standard or better.
