THE HURON EXPOSITOR, Novontim 14, 2001-11
Council not sure of need for farm advisory groups
By Scott Hilgendorff
Expositor Editor
Council has tabled a request to
support forming local farm advisory
committees to have input on agricutlural
issues such as the current formation of a
nutrient management plan for Huron
County.
McKillop counc. Ferg Kelly
requested the motion be tabled until
after the nutrient mangement plan is in
place.
"I'd like to see it turned down or
tabled until we sort out what's going
on," said Kelly.
Mayor Lin Steffler didn't see the need
of adding an extra layer to the
committee already putting together the
nutrient management plan.
Float will be in two parades
Huron East staff will be working to
revamp the former Seaforth Christmas
float to be entered in Seaforth's Santa
Claus parade Nov. 30 and Brussel's
parade the following day.
The current float has a replica of the
town hall on it but also bears the name,
Seaforth,
"To get it ready for the parade
wouldn't take a whole lot," said public
works manager John Forrest after
McKillop counc. Ferg Kelly questioned
whether or not they had enough time to
represent the new municipality in the
parades this year.
Resident wants driveway
made level after road work
A Tuckersmith resident is asking
Huron East council to raise his laneway
to be level with a newly recontructed
stretch of road on Concession 2.
"You folks have solved your
snowplowing problem but now I have
one," said Walter Denys in a
presentation to council at its Nov. 6
meeting.
The road had been built up to help
make plowing the road easier but by
being higher now than Denys' laneway,
he is concerned that will cause it to fill
in with snow instead.
Denys had allowed 'the former
Tuckersmith Township to take down
land in front of his property to help
alleviate some trouble with the road
filling in with snow because the land on
both sides was higher than the road.
However, he showed council pictures
that show how, because the land was
lowered and the road was made higher,
the road is now higher than the laneway.
Grey counc. Alvin McLellan was
concerned if council fixed this problem,
how many other people were affected as
well.
Denys said many were affected by the
construction but some have driveways
that still slope down to the road anyway.
"I think we should discuss it later on,"
said McKillop counc. Ferg Kelly.
Before leaving, Denys reminded
council he was nice enough to let them
make changes to his property to help
accommodate the road and was now
hoping they would give him the same
consideration.
Councillors said they would drive out
to see the property and a decision was
tabled until the next regular council
meeting on Nov. 20.
Overnight parking not allowed on
streets until spring
Huron East council is reminding
residents there is no parking on streets
in urban areas between 2 a.m. and 6
a.m. from now until April 6 to allow for
snow removal.
Vehicles left overnight on streets will
be ticketed and could have their
vehicles towed away.
It is also against the bylaws to park
anywhere that interferes with snow
removal or to put snow and ice from
driveways onto roadways.
Council opposes tax holiday,
resolution would help the rich
Council is not supporting a resolution from the City of
Toronto calling for a tax holiday in Ontario.
"You probably only end up helping the rich who can afford
to go out and buy a lot," said Deputy Mayor Bernie MacLellan
at Huron East council's Nov. 6 meeting.
Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman sent a letter to council asking it
to support a resolution to withhold provincial and federal taxes
on clothing items below $75 and school supplies including
Canadian books, below $20 this month and next August.
It also requested that retailers be required to provide a further
15 per cent discount on the same items.
But MacLellan said low income families cannot afford to
take advantage of the tax suspension the same way the wealthy
can, by purchasing larger quantities of the discounted items.
He said low income families would not be able to take
advantage of the discount enough to really be of any benefit.
"I feel it will not benefit the people who it is supposed to
benefit," said Seaforth coun. Dick Burgess. "Our tax dollars
will not benefit the people it should benefit. I will oppose this."
Mayor Lin Steffler also took exception to the wording of the
resolution that focussed on benefitting Toronto families, not the
rest of the province.
She also disagreed with the idea of forcing merchants to give
an additional 15 per cent.
"I don't know if that's fair," she said.
"If they don't get it there, they'll get it out of your pockets
somewhere else," said Tuckersmith counc. Larry McGrath of
the provincial and federal governments.
