From Page 1
the fire department was
strictly to remove the
substance from the building,
and take it to a waiting police
cruiser so it could be shipped
to Etobicoke for testing. The
tire department, he said, was
best equipped to deal with the
situation, as they have
breathing apparatus and fire
suits to offer protection.
The person who
discovered the substance,
Gall said, was sent home to
shower, and told to bag her
clothes until further notice.
"We were able to contain the
area in which it was found,"
Gall said, noting that while it
was business as usual in the
area of the slots facility 'used
by the public, things were a
"little chaotic" behind the
scenes.
Pointing out that the slots
receive'rolled coin from a
number of sources, Gall said
that incidents of finding a
substance in the coins is
going to happen. However,
when it does happen,
especially in light of recent
world events, he said, "We
will err on- the side of
caution."
He added that even though
only miniscule amounts of a
substance were discovered,
"We want to ensure we do the
right thing. We had to do
what we had to do."
The sample was sent away
for tests, and Gall reported
that although he asked the
police what the analysis
showed, "The sample was so
miniscule, they could only
test it for anthrax. They ruled
out what it wasn't."
According to Van Riesen,
plans are in the works at the
county level to look at setting
up plans for anthrax scares. A
meeting was scheduled for
Tuesday with the county's
fire coordinator, the police
and the Huron County Health
Unit, he said, to set up
protocols. "We have to be
prepared."
Police investigators
looking into the incident at
the Clinton Racetrack Slots
were unavailable for
comment by press time.

of Mistie's disappearance.
Mistie's father, Steve
Murray, had originally been
charged with her murder
despite the fact there .was no
weapon, no demonstrated
motive, no body found
despite extensive sonar
searching and several
witnesses contradicting the
police theory that Mistie's
body had been dumped in
Lake Huron.
Steve Murray was
acquitted by a jury after only
45 minutes of deliberation.
Mistie's mother continued
to fight the police over their
lack of effort in
investigating possible
sightings of Mistie.
Anne Murray was able to
initiate a police audit by the
York Region Police with
findings accepted by the
Ontario Civilian
Commission on Police
Services. It was the first
such audit ever resulting
from a civilian complaint.
The audit resulted in new
recommendations on how
missing -persons cases
should be handled.
