Egmondville couple
Darwin and Zelda Bannerman of Egmondville had an
unusual cruise this summer aboard a Great Lakes freighter. the
cruise was awarded through a Huron County Children's Aid
Society draw.
The 10 -day cruise (Jul 29 -Aug. 7) was aboard a 730 ft.
working freighter ship, the "Canadian Miner," owned by the
Upper Lakes Shipping Company and managed by Seaway
Marine.
It started in St. Catharines and went through part of the
Welland Canal, across Lake Ontario, through the 1000
Islands, down the St. Lawrence River toPort Cartier.Quebec
and then back to St. Catharines. The ship was carrying #2
yellow corn (25,243.43 metric tonnes) which was loaded at
Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The corn was unloaded in Port Cartier and then the ship
went across the harbour where a load of iron ore was loaded
for the trip back to the Dofasco Steel Milts in Hamilton. The
couple found it interesting to see them lower a huge front-end
loader into the hold to move the corn around.
In Port Cartier, the captain took them to the Quebec Cartier
Mining Company where they were treated to a tour of the
has freighter cruise
complex. They saw mountains of different kinds of iron ore.
The company employs 2200 people including the miners up
in Labrador. The annual production of this plant is 18 million
tonnes, the largest in the world.
Some of the highlights of the trip included going through
the many locks and passing by Old Quebec City where they
could see the Chateau Frontenac Hotel, Old Fort Quebec and
the Queen Elizabeth II which was docked there. As they
passed Montreal, they saw Man and His World (the Expo '67
site) and the Olympic Stadium.
They were also pleased to see several whales, yellow -
bellied seals and porpoises in the St. Lawrence River.
The 1,000 Islands were also beautiful to pass through,
especially seeing Bolt Castle and many beautiful homes
along the shore.
Coming up to Hamilton they had a real good view of the
Burlington Skyway Bridge.
The crew of the Canadian Miner was extremely friendly
and made them feel welcome. They were well taken care of
and the meals were excellent. This was -a once-in-a-lifetime
trip which they will always remember.

Sixteen members and
spouses attended the Zone

Mitchell hosted by Mitchell
Branch on Sunday, enjoying
entertainment by the
Mitchell Legion Pipe Band
and "The Old Spice Girls."
Last Thursday night; Zone

and his deputy Shirley
Chalmers paid their official
visit to the Branch and
reported that everything was
in good order.
Owing to a double
booking of the hall, the

Once again, Royal
Canadian Legion Canada is
requesting the public,
industries and stores observe
the two -minutes "Wave of
Silence" beginning in
Newfoundland and
travelling across each
province at 11 a.m. We hope
everyone will observe this
silence wherever you are, at
the cenotaph, church or even
your own homes.
At that time, we will also
pause to remember those
who died in the tragedy on
Sept. 11.
I have received an address
where people can send
letters to be delivered to our
Canadian service personnel
who are now overseas. If
you would like to
correspond with a service
person, address your letter
to Canadian Contingent
Stabilization Force, P.O.
Box 5003 Stn. Forces,
Belleville, Ont. K8N 5W6.
I'm sure letters or Christmas
cards will be appreciated by
these people away from
home.
On Dec. 8, there will be a
turkey dinner held at the
Branch and tickets will be
available at the Branch and
from members. At the
dinner there will be draws
for one $100 food voucher
and two, $50 food vouchers.
Dinner tickets will be $8 per
persona
At the going down of the
sun and in the morning we
will remember them.
