Large families said to increase number
of home -schooled kids in Seaforth
From Pogo 1
of a home -schooled child, is
to have an administrator from
the school serving the area in
which they live visit the
home at least once per year.
Smith questioned Gerth
following his presentation,
wondering why Seaforth
Public School might go
against the.board-wide trend.
Smith said the number of
home -schooled children
within the school's catchment
area has gone from six to 14
in the past three years.
In an phone interview after
the meeting, Smith said he
wondered if the increased
number of home -schooled
children had anything to do
with dissatisfaction about the
"turmoil" that's surrounded
Seaforth schools during the
past several years.
"The ultimate way of
finding that out is to
interview those families but I
don't have any specific
information about that. The
data suggests something
different is going on in
Seaforth and I'm not getting
the kind of information I
believe I should have," he
said.
Gerth cited the presence of
"two particular families" with
unusually large numbers of
children, which have chosen
not to attend the Seaforth
school.
"But I don't believe there's
any trend, that there's any
particular instance of
something going on at the
board which is causing
people to seek home -
schooling, if that's what
you're wondering about," the
superintendent cautioned.
According to Gerth's
report, 199 elementary -level
students within Avon
Maitland territory are home -
schooled. The elementary
school with the largest
number of home -schooled
children within its catchment
area is Howick Central
Public School at R.R. 1
Gorrie, with 26.
Seaforth Public School is
next with 14, followed by
two schools with 13 -- Grey
Central Public School in
Ethel and Huron Centennial
Public School at R.R. 1
Brumfield -- and two with 11
-- East Wawanosh Public
School in Belgrave and
Turnberry Central Public
School at R.R. 4 Wingham.
Among Avon Maitland
secondary schools, F.E.
Madill in Wingham has the
most home -schooled children
within its catchment area,
with five. Altogether, 17
secondary -level students
within the district are known
to be home -schooled.
Terrorist attack fuels energy of hatred
From Pogo 4
And, with Middle East countries warning that retaliation
from the U.S. will only fuel more hatred of America, Bush's
predictions seem all too accurate.
No form of security is in place in the United States to
prevent the devastation that happened last week and so it is
difficult to imagine how bombing Afghanistan will prevent
other equally devastating attacks on the U.S. and its allies.
What's most disturbing to me is that U.S. leaders are not
taking any responsibility for actions, attitudes and policies
that could have culminated in last week's tragedy.
Nowhere do we see CIA spokespeople apologizing for
training terrorists, as they did the accused Osama bin
Laden.
Nowhere do we see U.S. leaders questioning whether or
not their policies of acting as the world's democracy police
have been the wisest courses of action.
Instead, we hear assertions that America is "the white
light," the ultimate good guy who is going to annihilate all
"evildoers."
And, instead, we see people shocked that Palestinian
children would cheer while viewing pictures of the attack.
People do not learn to hate for no reason. And, the
terrorist attack has fueled the energy of hatred once more.

But, has hatred ever been an effective response to being
hated? Has hatred ever stopped violence? Has hatred ever
brought peace to the world?
With nuclear weapons so readily available to many
countries, the stakes are so much higher than they were in
any previous world war, as was driven home to us so
thoroughly during the Cold War between America and the
former Soviet Union.
I mourn with every friend and family member who lost a
loved one in the terrorist attack.
And, I also mourn for the human race and all the terror
and suffering that is sure to continue while hatred reigns.

Terry Fox Run
Gary Betties, of Seaforth and his daughter Jill walk their dog
Cally in the Terry Fox Run on Sunday morning. The Iwo, who
participate in memory of Gary's wife Barb, who died of cancer
close to three years ago, have helped raise funds for cancer
research every year for six years. With 95 participants in
Seaforth, $4,065 has been collected for this year's fundraiser,
says organizer Marty Bedard, of the Huron East recreation
department.
