Grade 8 students tour
St. Peter's Basilica
The students
at St. Columban
School closed
St. Columban
their year of
study with an assembly to say "farewell"
to those teachers who have given so much
of themselves and are now leaving the
school to go elsewhere. Kathy Waechter,
Annemarie Petrasek, Cynthia Nowak,
Sharon O'Grady and Christa
Murray were given many best
wishes as they leave this school
community.
The Grade 8 class celebrated
with graduation exercises held at
St. Patrick's in Dublin. The
graduation mass was concelebrated
by Father Moe Charbonneau and
Father Tony Daniels. Each of the
students participated in .the mass in
some way. Presentations followed
recognizing the achievements of
many of these young people.
Melissa Murray was valedictorian for
the event.
Jean Van Drunen was the guest of
honour as neighbours and friends gathered
at the St. Columban parish hall to say
"goodbye." The evening get-together was
spent in a few good games of euchre and
socializing. A presentation was made to
Jean followed by luncheon and a cake.
Jean is moving to Mitchell.
Sue Maehre from Flint Michigan spent a
couple of days with Nancy and Kevin
Kale, Patrick and Michael. Sue is Nancy's
cousin and they spent some time visiting
relatives in the area.
The gym at St. Michael Secondary
School was decorated in blue and gold as
several area people gathered for the
graduation exercises held there. A short
prayer service conducted by Barbara
Bauer-Maison and Nathaniel Mateus-Ruiz
began an evening which saw many of our
local young people recognized for their
individual achievements.
Rev. Paul and Mrs. Zena Stephaniuk
were honoured as the local Knights of
Columbus hosted an open house event in
their hall in St. Columban on the weekend.
Friends, neighbours, old acquaintances,
colleagues and family members enjoyed a
visit along with a barbecue and cake as
they came to help the couple celebrate the
milestones in
their life: Rev.
Paul and Zena
celebrated 55
years of marriage, as well as Rev. Paul's
85th birthday, his 40 years as a Knight of
Columbus and his 25 years as a deacon.
He is currently serving as chaplain to the
local Knights.
Tom and Joanne Melady, Lisa and
Danielle, hosted the annual
Melady reunion recently.
Relatives, neighbours and friends
enjoyed a day of reminiscing,
visiting, a barbecue and wagon
rides with the horses through the
farm. A jam session featuring
local musicians, Lou Rowland,
Bruce Eisler, Dave Murtha and
Keilan and Dan Murtha, provided
lively entertainment for the event.
A three song tribute was made to
Dorothy Harbach, who is the
oldest sister of Ted Melady (deceased).
The tribute of "She'll Be Coming Round
the Mountain." "Dusty Old Farmer" and
"When Irish Eyes are Smiling" brought
back many a memory. Visiting in the area
and attending the event were Ferg and Kay
Melady from Belle River; Tom Melady
from Goderich; Don Melady and friend,
Rolly, from Toronto.
Vincent and Hazel Murray have returned
from a visit with his daughter and her
family, Loretta and Gord Butters in North
Delta, B.C. They also visited with
grandson, Dean Murray, who provided
transportation to and from the airport.
Sister Rita Coyne, Windsor, renewed old
acquaintances and caught up with old
friends as she visited with Ken and Mary
Coyne, Mary Jane, Pat and Cathy, this
past weekend.
Students from the Grade 8 class at St.
Columban School accompanied Father
Moe Charbonneau, pastor at St. Patrick's,
Dublin, to London where he took them on
a tour of St. Peter's Seminary and St.
Peter's Basilica. The students are busy
preparing for their graduation festivities.
In recent soccer action, the St.
Columban women's team defeated Delko
by a score of 7-0 in a home game on
Sunday.
