Cents beat Thamesford
but lose to Belmont 6-3
The Centenaires opened the weekend one
point ahead of Exeter for fifth place overall
but ended the weekend one point back after
splitting their final regular season home
games.
Friday, the Cents hosted Belmont,
currently sitting out of the playoff race, but
weren't up for the task as a slow start in the
first period dug a hole too deep to climb from
with a lacklustre effort.
Jeff Arnold got on the board first but four
consecutive goals by the Bombers saw
Seaforth trail 4-1 after the opening frame.
Tim McClure went hard to the net early in
the second, banging home a rebound to
narrow the gap but the Bombers answered
back. Scott Henderson added a shorthanded
tally on a breakaway but again the Bombers
answered.
A scoreless third saw the Cents with
numerous scoring opportunities but unable to
draw even, dropping the game 6-3.
"That is a game we should have won and
needed to win," said coach Jason Papple.
"We were flat and unmotivated."
The loss was even more costly as Exeter
won their game in Mitchell to jump a point
ahead of Seaforth in the standings.
Saturday's game was set up to be an even
tougher battle as second place Thamesford
visited for their final time this regular season.
Derek Akey walked in from the point and
let a wrist shot fly that put Seaforth up by
one.
Thirty seconds later, a giveaway at their
own blue line cost the Cents the lead as
Thamesford tied it up.
Jeff Maccuspey sent Scott Henderson
speeding up the right wing midway through
the period and Henderson slid home the go-
ahead goal.
Thamesford got the evener as Seaforth
scrambled in their own end closing out the
period at 2-2.
Thamesford took the lead on a shorthanded
goal of their own but Akey replied to even
the score again.
The Trojan power play tipped in a marker
to take a 4-3 lead into the third.
The Cents battled hard in the third and
thought they had evened the game on a
scramble early in the period but the goal was
called back as the net had apparently been
dislodged.
Seaforth kept up the pressure and got the
evener as Henderson snuck in the off wing
and cut to the net, beating a sprawling Trojan
netminder to draw the game even.
The Cents took over the lead minutes later
when a sustained forecheck allowed
Henderson to walk in from the boards and
bury his seventh game winning goal of the
season.
"The only team that beats this team, is this
team," said coach Art Larivee.
"When we are ready to go, we can play
with any team in the league."
Seaforth captured seven out of a possible
10 points against the second place 'Trojans, a
team that could turn out to be a second -round
playoff matchup.
Unfortunately for the Cents, Exeter snuck
out another win in Belmont Saturday to
remain one point up on the locals.
The Hawks face Port Stanley this week
• while the Cents revisit the Bombers. Seaforth
will play Exeter in Huron Park on Sunday at
2 p.m. in what is a must -win for Seaforth if
they hope to play Lucan in the first round,
rather than Mount Brydges.
The Cents filled their roster this weekend
adding defencemen Jason Brenzil and Dan
Robinson and forward Jake Mavity.
