Christmas lights turn St. Columban
into welcoming fairy tale village
With Christmas just around the
corner, the village of St.
Columban waits in readiness.
St. Columban
Every home is decorated and
alight with colour.
When driving through at night, you would think you were
visiting a fairy tale village. Even the church has
Christmas trees trimmed with a soft glow of blue
lights on the porch, welcoming anyone who enters.
The people of St. Columban are ready to celebrate
the Christmas season and everyone is invited to join
the celebration. Mass will be celebrated on Christmas
morning, Dec. 25, starting with a carol service and
children's pageant at 9:30 a.m. New Year's
celebrations will begin with Mass on New Year's Eve,
Dec. 31, in St. Columban Church at 5 p.m. Everyone
is welcome to join in the celebrations.
Many of the local people have taken advantage of
the superb offering of concerts available in the area. •
Stacy and Kailyn Burke, members of the St. Marys
Children's Choir, performed recently in Stratford.
There was local interest in concerts held at St. Joseph's
Church in Stratford, and Northside United Church in
Seaforth. The fine singing brings about a Christmas spirit for
everyone.
The students at St.
Columban School presented a
Christmas Concert on Dec. 18
with performances in the afternoon
and evening. The theme for the concert was, "A Storybook
Christmas." Each class presented a segment.
Mrs. Klaver's Grade 4 class presented
"Charlotte's Web" (a sequel); Mrs. Buchanan's
Grade 5 class reenacted the Nativity of Jesus; Mrs.
Boersen's Grade 6 class performed a skit entitled
"Christmas Party," a story about a store where the
toys come alive; Mr. Vanden Hengel's Grade 7 class
gave a list of outstanding records from the Guiness
Book of Records where the reddest nose was that of
a reindeer named Rudolph; Mrs. Gregus' Grade 7/8
class performed "Peter Pan" (a sequel); Mr. Haid's
Grade 7/8 class performed "A Christmas Carol," the
story of Scrooge.
The students will participate in a "Buddy
Day" this week on Wednesday and Thursday when
they will go to St. Patrick's School in Dublin and
connect with the Kindergarten to Grade 3 there. The final day
of classes before the holidays will be celebrated with a "Red
and Green Day" where everyone will wear red and green.

Canadian National Juvenile Broomball
Tournament March 2001
. Palmerston and Arthur, Ontario
With the year 2001, being the "Year of the Volunteer", we (National
Committee) were extremely fortunate to experience it first hand. Had
it not been for the many Volunteers, generous Sponsors and
Donations, this past Tournament would not have been possible.
In a very short period of time, put together with much mutual help,
we were able to produce a National Level Tournament. This was a
major achievement, considering the basic no frills cost to run a
National Tournament Is somewhere around the twenty thousand -dol-
lar mark. There is absolutely no funding for the venture, once you
take on a job; it is also your job to find enough money to run the
show, and manpower. Our Sponsors pitched In from every corner of
Central West and beyond. Central West Region consists of Blyth,
Mildmay, Palmerston, Seaforth and surrounding area. Monetary dona-
tions were of utmost Importance, but skills, product and hands-on
help were of great value as well. The list of whom all deserved credit
and thanks would be never ending, and with so many generous con-
tributors I would not want to miss a single one. Therefore you will
have to excuse us for not printing each name or group.
Three Central West teams competed, as well as two of the teams
stepped In and were Tournament Hosts. Our Central West athletes did
us PROUD!! "Hitmen" (Seaforth - Blyth & area) won the Gold on the
"A" side, and are the 2001 Canadian National Champs. Congratulations
to Scott Leonhardt, Rob Hunking and all the "liftmen". "C.W. Posse"
(Palmerston - Mildmay & areas) won Gold on the "B" side, and were
Hosts for the Tournament. They had won Nationals In 1999 in Leduc,
Alberta. Congratulations to Dave Yungblut, Clare Schleck, Scott Hie
and the rest of the "Posse". "C.W. Assassins (Juvenile Girls) hosted the
Tournament and played 6 toygh games over the duration of the
Tournament. Over all the final standings did not show a true picture
of their talents. No "Gold" or "Silver" was to be for the "Assassins",
but in my personal opinion, each and every one of them is worth
"Gold". Thanks to Shawn Kaye for stepping In as Coach, on short
notice, and for Vince Wilhelm over the years.
2002 Juvenile Nationals will be held in Oak Bluff, Manitoba • Mar. 27 -
30/02. The "Hitmen" return to Nationals not only as "Returning
Champs" but won the Ontario Provincial Qualifier Tournament In
Stroud/Lefroy Dec. 1 & 2/01. Silver Winners were a team from Windsor,
so Ontario will be represented by two Juvenile boy's teams. The
Ontario Juvenile Girl's team of East (Seaway Devils) will be the female
reps (surprise, surprise). But not without a battle, "Thunder" (anoth-
er Eastern Juvenile team) gave them a run for their money, pushing
the finals to two games and squeaking by with 1 - 0 win in overtime.
Again It would not have been a reality without such strong
Community Support, financially and manpower wise. THANK YOU one
and all!! Have a Very Merry and Safe Christmas.
We happened to have a
couple of snapshots of the
"Assassin" squad,
(Left) Team Captain,
Corinne Leonhardt and Assistant
Captain Mel Harrison (Below)

menu.
The zone euchre will be
held Jan. 26. Sign up on the
list on the board if you wish
to play.
The December general
meeting will be on Dec. 20 at
8 p.m. Please plan to attend.
All members, regular and
associate are encouraged to
attend.

Bear Facts
Things are winding down
at SDHS before the
Christmas break.
The 'Sleeping Children
Around the World'
campaign finished with the
students raising $1000.05
(30 bed kits), which was
well above our goal of $540
(18 bed kits). Bed kits
include pillows and
blankets to ensure children
in poor countries receive
some nighttime comforts.
The Angel Tree
Campaign, which aids the
Huron County Christmas
Bureau, wrapped up with
430 items being collected,
this was well above our
goal of 300 items.
As an incentive for
surpassing our goal for the
Angel Tree campaign, our
principal Mr. Tessier agreed
to wear a dress for the
entire school day. Some
students had mixed
reactions to the style and
colour of the dress.
As another incentive to
this goal, the prime minister
of student's council, Kent
Moffett and the deputy
prime minister of student's
council, James
Montgomery, agreed to
shave their heads. The
deputy social convenor,
Wade Broome, agreed to.
have his legs shaved. All of
the shaving was done at an
assembly held on Monday,
Dec. 10.
The senior boys
basketball team won their
home opener (Dec. 10)
against CHSS (Clinton).
As well they won their
game against GDCI
(Goderich) on Dec. 12.
The junior boys
basketball team lost both of
the games, but put forth a
terrific effort.
SDHS is holding their
semi -formal dance on Dec.
21. The theme for this
dance is Shagadelic
Christmas, where students
can dress in '705 fashions.
