Huron Expositor, 2001-11-07, Page 18Want to see into the future? 111 -THE MY ON IXPO$STOR, Novsm sr 7, 3001 Sports Centenaire win against Mitchell a `questionable effort,' says GM The Centenaires hosted division rival Mitchell Hawks at the arena Friday night. The Hawks were Centenaires suffering a depleted lineup due to a brawl the previous game but looked early as if their shortened bench was enough for the Cents as Seaforth struggled with injuries of their own. The Hawks were first on the board as their power play went to work two minutes in to grab the opening lead. The Cents' power play answered back with a goal of their own when Matt Roberts got hold of a rebound to beat the Hawks netminder. With two minutes to go in the period, Jeff MacCuspey found Derek Akey free in the slot and Akey buried his first of the year to take the lead for Seaforth. Halfway through the second the Hawks evened the score again before Luke Vick found a loose puck in the slot and snuck a backhander in to put the Cents up 3-2. The Hawks answered back however walking through from a faceoff and beating Nathan Illman to even the score at three after forty minutes. Newcomer Jeff McEwin notched his first goal as a Centenaire on a shot from the point while Bill Bradley caused a screen in front of the Hawks net. As time wound down in the third a blocked shot led to a Hawks breakaway allowing them to tie the game again with four minute; to play. It looked like the Cents would head to overtime for the first time this season until McEwin walked in from the point and found a seam to bury the winner with his third point of the game. Despite the win general manager Dave Parsons was not happy with the performance. "The effort was questionable tonight, we only played as well as we had to," he said. The win improved the Cents record to four wins and seven losses; all four wins coming on home ice. Sunday, the Cents returned to Mt. Brvdges for a rematch with the defending champion Bulldogs. The Centenaires put forth a solid effort but came up short in the end. The game was scoreless through two periods, but the Bulldogs opened the scoring in the third and going up by two on a wrap around midway through. The Cents looked to get back into the game but had a goal called back on a disputed high stick. Each team added another goal as the Cents fell 3-1. "It was a solid effort tonight," said coach Jason Papple. "We had some good opportunities we didn't finish on. It could just as easily have gone our way."
