Huron Expositor, 2001-10-03, Page 1414 -THE HURON EXPOSITOR, October 3, 2001 Sports Spirited crowd cheers on Cents against Exeter despite 5-o loss It wasn't for lack of trying, but the young Centenaires squad went 0 for 2 this past weekend. Friday's contest against Exeter Centenaires proved exciting for the large vocal crowd but the Cents weren't able to finish on any of their opportunities in a 5-0 loss. Seaforth scrambled through the opening 10 minutes lacking some leadership as Mike Murray and Jason Brenzil sat out and Jay Baker and Derek Akey went down early with injuries. The Hawks' powerplay did most of the damage accounting for three of their five tallies but Seaforth wasn't able to respond despite some glorious chances. The crowd was on its feet several times as the Cents -looked like they might make it close. "I don't think anyone who was watching that game would have guessed a 5-0 score," commented general manager Dave Parsons indicating the competitiveness of the two teams. On Sunday, the Cents made their first road trip of the season to Lambeth, the Lancers back after a one-year hiatus. The Cents would have to be on their game as the Lancers are being touted early as one of the teams to watch out for. Seaforth played a spirited first period and managed to open Keith Snell is this year's most improved bowler Lawnbowling Club The Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club held its final jitney on Saturday afternoon at the greens with everyone winning a small prize. The weather was ideal and after a short social hour everyone went to a banquet at a Local restaurant. Highlighting the evening was the presentation of an award to the most improved bowler this year, presented by Terry Ford and his wife in memory of his parents, Len and Janet Ford, former members of the Seaforth Club. Keith Snell was the recipient of a cash award and this is to be an ongoing award yearly by the Ford family. Tuesday evening saw 29 members out for the potluck supper and social. Jack and Marie Muir were hosting and welcomed all present on such a rainy night. Five tables of euchre, very competitive at times were played and winners were: white cards, high, Jack Muir, lone hands, Betty Hulley; consolation, Ida Diehl; yellow cards, high, Edna Mitchell; lone hands, John Goldsmith; consolation, Mary McClure. Bowling at London Fairmont Club on Saturday in the McIntosh family tournament Jack and Marie Muir received the consolation prize. Mary Finlayson the second period in a 0-0 tie. The Lancers struck early in the period capitalizing a 2 on 1 for the lead. Midway through, a powerplay goal sealed a 2-0 second period lead. The Cents played feverishly into the third and got on the board when Jason Brenzil slapped in a rebound off a scramble in front started by Steve Henderson. The Lancers got hold of their two -goal lead taking advantage of a poor clearing attempt. But the Cents answered back one minute later as Chris Longstaff fired a shot from th! point that put the locals within a goal again. But that's as close as they could get, dropping the 4-2 decision. "Despite the loss, I'd say it was our best game so far," said coach Jason Papple. "I think we gave them all they could handle tonight." That's high praise for a Centenaire team that featured 12 players 17 years old or younger including 15 -year-old Matt Dalton who played the game in goal. The weekend drops the Cents' record to 1 and 2 before hosting Thamesford Friday night. submitted photo Senior Games award winners 2000 and 2001 District Senior Games participants were recently awarded medals.
