News Huron East to send letters to school -area residents before smoking pads get OK By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Staff Huron East council wants to question residents of Chalk Street near Seaforth District High School before giving the school permission to build cement pads to solve its student smoking problems. Because the Ministry of Health recently informed schools that smoking may no longer occur on school property, many are now scrambling to find a solution that will not upset neighbouring homeowners. A letter to council from principal Wayne Tessier suggested cement pads be poured on municipal land on either side of the school across the street from private homes to allow students a "dry, clean place for students to congregate." "It would be wonderful if we could simply tell students not to smoke and they would then follow the directive. Unfortunately this is not the case. Because the habit is so addictive, we know that students will continue to smoke and unfortunately they will smoke on private property in the vicinity of the school or in an uncontrolled fashion on public land," he said in his letter. But, councillors worried that okaying the cement pads would also be condoning smoking. "I realize we have to do something but it's almost like giving permission to the students to smoke," said Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath. Seaforth Coun. Dick Burgess said that while the schools have been placed in a "difficult or impossible position," he opposes the cement pads because they shift the burden from the school to the municipality. "I don't feel we need or should accept providing anybody a place for juveniles to break the law," he said. Brussels Coun. Joe Seili said the situation is going to cause ratepayers to become irate. "I don't condone it either..1 think the people selling cigarettes to minors ought to be punished," he said. Grey Coun. Graeme MacDonald worried that if council doesn't cooperate with the school, their stand could be "used as a ploy to close Seaforth (high school) down." Seaforth Coun. Bill Teall said the proposed cement pads are located where 10 feet of snow is piled during the winter. Clerk-Adminstrator Jack McLachlan responded that the school will be responsible for snow removal. The letter from Tessier also says the school will keep the area clean. Huron East council tabled a motion to grant the school's request and decided to send letters to all Chalk Street residents from Side Street to Duke Street before going further. McLachlan said there had not yet been any complaints to the municipality from residents near the school. Breakfast program trying to expand Poor eating habits among children in Canada are a growing concern in the classroom. There is no question that nutrition and school performance are linked. Children who are hungry cannot learn to their potential. Sept. 10 - Oct. 8 is Breakfast for Learning Month and the Huron Perth School Nutrition Partnership is taking this opportunity to let communities and schools know that it's looking to expand the Breakfast for Learning Program in both counties this coming school year. It may surprise you that a 1998-99 survey in Huron and Perth Counties by researchers from the University of Guelph Found that one out of five students in Grades 4-8 and two out of three students in Grade 12 go to school each day without eating anything at all. People arc often taken aback when they first learn that nutrition is an issue in their schools and communities. It's common for people to think that poor eating habits are found only in inner sections of big cities or in isolated and poor communities. Not so, say the front line workers in school and community nutrition programs - children with poor eating habits come from all walks of life. To date, Breakfast for Learning, has helped nourish over 470,000 children through breakfast, lunch and/or snack programs in over 3,687 communities, supporting over 30,000 volunteers, across the country. If you are interested in learning more about the Breakfast for Learning program and how it might work in your school please contact: Nancy Fisher at: phone (519) 482-3416 or 1- 877-837-6143, fax: (519) 482-7820, e-mail nfisher@srhip.on.ca Community Calendar WED., OCT. 3 9:30-10:30 a.m. - Preschool Playgroup at Northside United Church 10:30 - 11:00 a.m. - Toylending Library at Northside United Church 1:00-3:00 p.m. - Parents' and Tots' Skating at the Arena 1:30-4:00 p.m. - Senior Shuffleboard at the Community Centres 5:30-6:30 p.m. - Pee Wee I and Pee Wee II Hockey Practice 6:30-7:30 p.m. - Pee Wee Girls' Hockey Practice 7:30-8:30 p.m. - Atom I Hockey Practice 8:30-9:30 p.m. - Bantam I Hockey Practice 9:30-10:30 p.m. - Midget Hockey Practice THURS., OCT. 4 9:00-10:00 a.m. - Fitness is Fun at the Arena 4:00-6:00 p.m. - Figure Skating at the Arena 6:00-7:00 p.m. - Tyke Hockey Practice 7:00-8:00 p.m. - Atom II Hockey Practice 8:00-9:00 p.m. - Bantam II Hockey Practice 8:00-11:00 p.m. - Mixed Basketball at the Highschool FRI., OCT. 5 10:30-11:30 a.m. - Preschool Story Hour at the Seaforth Library 1:30 p.m. - Seniors 5 Pin Bowling at Starlight Lanes 4:34 -5:35 p.m. - Houseleague Hockey Practice at the Arena 5:35-6:35 p.m. - Novice II Hockey Practice at the Arena 6:35-7:35 p.m. - Novice I Hockey Practice at the Arena 7:45-11:00 p.m - Thamesford vs Centenaires Game at the Arena SAT, OCT 6 6:30-7:30 a.m. - Senior Houseleague Hockey - Leafs vs. Oilers 7:30-8:30 a m. - Senior Houseleague Hockey Sharks vs. Kings 8:30-9:30 a.m. - Junior Houseleague Hockey - Bruins vs. Blues 9:30-10:30 a.m. -Junior Houseleague Hockey - Panthers vs. Ducks 10:30-11:30 a.m. - Mites Hockey at the Arena 11:30 a.m.-11:00 p.m. - Minor Hockey Practices SUN. , OCT 7 2:30-4:00 p.m. - Free Public Skating at the Arena.
