Leading the charge for the Cents are captains Jake Mavity, Jason Brenzil, Mike Murray and Tim McClure. Last year's division -scoring champion Scott Henderson also returns for his overage year. Derek Akey and Jamie Black are back as standards on the blue line while Matt Roberts, Jeff MacCuspey and Jay Baker return up front. The Cents have signed a strong local contingent of affiliate players including Greg McGrath, Barry Young, Chris Longstaff, Luke Vick, Steve Henderson, Matt Dalton and Tyler Doig. Coach Jason Papple said the affiliates will play an important part in the team's regular lineup. Newcomers Josh Demo, Bill Bradley, Chris Rebello and Ryan Martin from Stratford and Blair Kremkau from Mitchell round out the squad; along with goalie Nathan Illman. General Manager Dave Parsons said the Cents have a"very young team but wit`: enough veterans for leadership." On Friday, the opening ceremonies included a tribute to victims in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks as members of the Seaforth Mites circled the ice with Canadian and American flags. When the game began it became apparent early that the Cents would be a quick, exciting young team to watch this season. Veteran Mike Murray recorded the first goal for the Cents this season when he pinched from the point and slapped in a rebound midway through the first. Murray went at it again a few minutes later crossing the blue line and firing a slap shot top corner on the Stars' goalie. Jay Baker put the Cents up 3-0 before rookie Barry Young went to the net off a face off and slipped in a rebound to open up a 4-0 first -period lead. The Cents looked like they were in control, but relaxed in their lead and North Middlesex took advantage. Twenty seconds into the second an awkward bounce let Parkhill slip in alone beating goalie Nathan Illman on the breakaway. A couple of pinpoint shots put the Stars within reach before a scramble saw Illman get knocked down outside the net and the Stars tip the evening goal into an open net. "It was the standard story, a big lead and a big let up," said Papple. "We lost some intensity." Despite outshooting the Stars 40-20 through two periods, the teams started the third tied at four. The Cents battled away and had some chances but it looked like the game might head to overtime until Roberts, Bradley and Demo turned a three -on -two rush into what proved to be the winner. The Cents host Exeter Friday at 8 p.m. and travel to Lambeth on Sunday to face the Lancers. Season wind-up happens Sept. 29 Saturday at the Seaforth greens saw the Goderich Club hosting a men's pairs tournament. The Bester family took first and second prize with father Bob and youngest son Ryan winning first while Chris and Mike won second. Neil Beuerman and Gar Baker placed third and fourth prize went to Tom Phillips and Lee Ryan. Consolation was Ken Barber and partner of Brussels. In out-of-town Seaforth Lawnbowling Club tournaments, two women's pairs teams bowled in Atwood on Tuesday at Max and Delphine's ladies pairs. Brenda Empey and her mother Mary Finlayson placed second in a closely played third game which ended, ten to nine for Brenda. Their opponents were Diane Terry and Sandy Ronson of London who had been to the Canadian National games, winning a bronze medal. Eileen Adamson and Jean Lunn won the consolation prize. At Mitchell on Wednesday, three Seaforth men's pairs teams competed under a very adverse rainy day and just two games were played. Jack Muir and Gar Baker won third prize. Fred Tilley and Erich Matzold won sixth and Neil Beuerman and Keith Snell, ninth. Wednesday will see the last tournament, a men's pairs at the Seaforth greens. The final wind-up of the season will be Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. with jitney bowling on the greens or cards in the club house for associate members, followed by a supper at a local restaurant.
