Seaforth runners are
first -place women's team
in ioo-K `extreme' race

Five Seaforth-area women
ran through gravel pits, along
river flats and even through
rivers to train for a 100 -
kilometre "extreme" race this
summer in Hell, Michigan
called Dances With Dirt.
And, while their
neighbours thought they
were a little crazy while
training, they were the first -
place female team of the
event on Sept. 8.
"It was quite an event and
a lot of fun. It was sort of
like a glorified car rally,"
says Faye Murray, who ran
the race along with Lynn
Devereaux, Darlene
Williams, Bonnie O'Reilly
and Wendy Currie.
Murray says it took nine
hours and 45 minutes to
complete the race, during
which each of the five team
members had to run five
legs. Each three to five -and -
a -half -mile leg was through
bush or swamp and in
between each leg, the team
had to jump into a vehicle
and drive the next runner to
the next checkpoint.
"Some of the trails were
marked but a lot of them
weren't and you had to run
over trees and under trees,"
says Murray.
"Lynn had the worst leg
through the swamp. She got
up to her thighs in the swamp
and a guy had to pull her out.
Another big guy got stuck in
the swamp and two guys had
to pull him out," she says.
Of the 275 teams, most of
whom were from Ontario

and Michigan, which started
the race, only 244 finished
and the Seaforth team,
calling themselves the
"Steel -Plated Sports Bras,"
came 39th overall.
Murray says many of the
teams were composed of
men or mixed genders and
most were younger runners.
"We got quite a good
handicap for being all female
and having a lot of members
over 40. There weren't a lot
of women in the race and
most of them were younger
than us," she says.
Both Murray and
Devereaux speni some time
lost in the bush. While
Devereaux had to team up
with other runners to find the
markers, which had been
sabotaged, Murray found
herself running half a mile
too far out of the way.
Some sections of the trails
were really dirty but most
trails had rivers to run
through, so Murray says
runners were able to clean
off in the river. Also most
trails had many hills going
through the bush.
"None of us got hurt but
you could have easily
sprained an ankle, the terrain
was so rough," she says.
Billed as the "longest and
most gruelling running event
in the Midwest," Dances
With Dirt is called "one of
the 12 most difficult trail
running events in the world,"
by Trail Runner magazine.
Run for the fifth year this
year, the event warns
competitors they will be
"scratched, bruised and at
times lost in this insane
terrain."
But, the first place
Seaforth team, who each won
a new pair of running shoes
for their effort, say they'll be
competing again next year to
defend their title.
