Ra..1....., Carl __a of Kathleen Banbury, and Janet Dalton, Alvin Dodds and Ab and Lou Whitney were at the special dedication service on Sept. 9. It was those people who left the bequeaths that made the project possible when work first began on the wing in 1998. In addition to the wing, the project included a new parking lot and, through the bequeaths, some computers brought into the Sunday school to help introduce children growing up in the computer -age to the Word of God. Money from the bequeaths was also able to help support local and world outreach funds and a benevolance fund which has helped people in the community from an abused woman who needed help setting up an apartment to another person needing help with gas money to be able to visit a relative. "I think it's important to let people know Northside is helping the community," said Macgregor. "We're trying to be there for the community if we can." The Millennium Wing got started through the leadership of the trustees, with Don McKercher as chair at that time, and through the support of the congregation that approved the expansion to the church. The wing, featuring an elevator/lift for those unable to take the stairs in the church, was the culmination of about three year's of work and planning. "The main purpose of this was to make the church accessible to everyone," said Rev. Sheila Macgregor. Now, after last week's terrorist attacks in New York, Macgregor said it stands as a symbol of hope as well, showing people that God can triumph. "Hopefully this is a beacon of hope in a world that really is bleak of hope right now," she said. Designed by Burt Dennis, a former Seaforth District High School student and built locally by Smith Construction, the wing features the lift and a wheelchair accessible washroom on the second floor with change tables for families to use. It opens to the north entrance of the sanctuary on both floors and was completed through bequeaths of several church families as a project of about $340,000. submitted photo Rev. He said the ceremony helped bring back a lot of memories of the history of the church as everyone gathered together to celebrate the expansion's opening. Ken Oldacre, chair of the renovations committee said the trustees arc now suggesting a possible second phase to the work started. Included would be updated meeting rooms and a modernized kitchen. The project has not been taken to the congregation for approval yet but Oldacre and Vincent remain hopeful it will approve further improvements to the church.
