However, for lack of a better way to say it, THANK YOU! Your love, sup- port, and dollars have overwhelmed Meighan's teachers. They are amazed at the support that Meighan has received from our community. Our reply to them is this is a community that believes the credo "it takes a village to raise a child." This community has been, and remains, a good, good place to raise this DeJong family. As I write this, "Gert" and her buddies have just boarded their plane and are on their way to beginning their adven- ture. By your encouragement and support, you too are a part of the adventure. Correspondents Students confirmed at special service held in Dublin By Mary C. Ryan 345-2560 emt St. Columban Bishop John Michael Sherlock, assisted by Father Pio Berochia, Father Dewan and Father Charbonneau, presided at Mass and confirmed 76 candidates from the parishes of St. Columban, St. Vincent de Paul and St. Patrick's in a ceremony at St. Patrick's Church in Dublin on May 1. A joint choir incorporating all three parishes, was directed by Caroline Simons, assisted by Charlene Delaney and Pam Ryan. Music was provided by organist and pianist, Brian Eckert, with Cathy Rops, Susan Christie and Carolyn Murray playing the guitars. Bishop Sherlock reminded the candidates that Jesus gave Himself for others and that now, the time has come for them to accept more responsibility in following that example. The group of young people have spent much time in preparation for this day, including an in-home study project, .a retreat day and community service. Kailyn Burke, Dianne Cronin, Jamie Cronin, Joseph Flanagan, Angela Jordan, Patrick Kale, Lisa Melady, Dianne Murray, Heather Murray, Melissa Murray and Owen O'Reilly from St. Columban were among the candidates. A reception followed in the St. Patrick's Parish Hall where the candidates could meet the Bishop and have some pictures taken and meet and visit with the people of the community. The ladies from St. Columban are invited to the "Spring Fling" being sponsored by the St. James Catholic Womens League. The event includes a bake table, entertainment, prizes, dessert and tea. The "Spring Fling" will take place at the Seaforth Legion on May 9 at 7 p.m. Mary Jane Coyne has returned from a trip to Las Vegas where her friend and roommate from Brock University, Jackie Olsen, was married. St. Columban School student, Traci Ducharme, has achieved several awards for her science fair project, "Fertilizer Solutions" at the recent Huron Perth Regional Inventors and Science Fair. Traci placed third in the Grade 8 Biological category, and received the Perth County Environmental Stewardship Award as well as the Aventis Crop Science Canada Co Regional Award for this project.
