Magic
with a lesson
Students at Seaforth Public
School were treated to an
unusual magic show with a
• message. Between tricks,
students were given tough
lessons about why they should
never start smoking or were
asked to quit if they already
did. They were shown pictures
of diseased lungs and were
asked to take an oath to never
start smoking.
McKillop man asks council not to pave his road
By Scott Hilgendorff
Expositor Editor
While one group of
residents is fighting for
paving on their McKillop
Road, another resident is
hoping Huron East council
will leave his road gravel.
Deputy Mayor Bernie
MacLellan said his
experience in Tuckersmith
council has seen lots of
paving requests come in but
added, "Ihave never before
heard of someone asking us
not to."
Paul VanderMolen was at
council's May 2 meeting to
request Huron East not go
ahead with plans to pave
Roxboro Line.
VanderMolen uses the
gravel road to train race
horses which provide about
one third of the McKillop
entrepreneur's income.
Pavement causes too much
stress oti''a horses' joints and
limbs and is dangerous for
the animal's health to be
likliabillaillia-.1.....110ddeAmilla .
trained on that hard a surface.
VanderMolen stressed
there is little traffic on the
road to merit paving which
would hurt a good portion of
his income.
He also operates a
landscaping business and
produces perennials from
that location and has
employed more than 85 teens
since he has been in
operation, pointing to the
income he brings into the
area.
If the road had to be paved,
VanderMolen asked if he
could at least be given
enough time to finish training
some new horses.
He said the paving would
mean he would have to
decide whether or not to
continue training horses if he
could not find a new
location.
VanderMolen said he
recently counted traffic on
Concession 14, the road its
residents were asking to have
paved at the meeting.
In one hour, between 3
p.m. and 4 p.m., he counted
14 vehicles using the road
while the following day,
during the same time period,
the only vehicle on his road
was a school bus.
He also said there are no
farms on the road that have
feed, livestock or produce
truck traffic.
In the three to four hours
he is out jogging horses, he
said rarely do any cars go by.
VanderMolen also pointed
out there are several paved
concession roads that are
already in need of repair.
He said it was his
understanding concession
roads were supposed to be
paved before any side roads
which were originally meant
to be farm service roads.
Meanwhile, Brenda Dalton
of Concession 14, made a
presentation on behalf of
residents of that road
requesting that paving be
done.
"We're famous for being
the only township road in
McKillop not paved." said
Brenda Dalton.
She said there are a couple
Targe hog operations on the
road now which has
increased the volume of truck
traffic.
She said the road is built
up and ready for paving
which would lead to cost
savings on'gravel. grading
and dust control.
Another resident of
Concession 14 suggested
council members sit at the
side of the road and "eat" the
dust generated by ail the
traffic.
A letter was also sent to
council by Katrina and Bruce
Godkin requesting paving.
In regards to
VanderMolen's concern other
concessions already needed
repair, McKillop Coun.
Sharon McClure said. "I
think Paul has a good point.
It's important we keep some
of our concessions up."
MacLellan suggested
maybe they could switch
which roads they were
looking at paving if there
wasn't a need to pave
Roxboro Line but there are
demands for paving on
Concession 14.
Brussels Coun. Greg
Wilson said if they are going
to add paving to one road.
they need to be sure they are
taking it away somewhere
else so they stay in control of
their spending as they
anticipate tax increases in
this year's budget.
McKillop Coun. Ferg
Kelly said he wasn't opposed
to paving Concession 14 but
was concerned some parts of
it might not be in proper
repair for paving right away.
Public Works Coordinator
John Forrest said he would
look into the situation and
see what has to he done for
paving and bring back a
report to council.
