Huron Expositor, 2001-05-02, Page 1818 -THE HURON EXPOSITOR, May 2, 2001 Sports Several Seaforth natives choosing career asa If it weren't for the wind everyone would be golfing in shorts and shirt- sleeves by now. Unfortunately Lake Huron has a tendency to keep things cool at this time of year, meaning that golfers are donning windbreakers and turtlenecks in order to get an early start. April can be a very fickle month. Cold, hot, windy, wet, - if you don't like the weather just wait awhile because it will surely change. Despite the challenges of determining just what to wear and where to aim that tee shot to compensate for the gale, many area golfers are out.enjoying their favourite summer pastime after a very long, cold winter. It was nice to see people relaxing on the patio in the sun. It was nice just to see the patio. Last Monday one of our former employees, Tony Greidanus, was home for a short visit and a couple of rounds of golf. Congratulations were in order as Tony had just finished the final leg of his journey to become a Class A Club Professional in the PGA of America. Tony, a Seaforth native, graduated from Seaforth District High School. During his high school years Tony worked part time at the Seaforth Golf Club on the grounds and in the clubhouse and pro shop. He worked on his game and became a member of the high school golf team. As Tony's game improved he decided that golf would be a good career path for him. Upon graduating from Seaforth District High School Tony was offered a golf scholarship at MercyHurst college in Erie, Pennsylvania where he was a member of the golf team and worked towards his degree in the hospitality industry. While attending MercyHurst Tony earned four NCAA victories and after turning pro finished 41st on the Western New York PGA Tour with six top ten finishes. Tony apprenticed at Lawrence Park Golf Club in Erie and also worked at a club in Vero Beach, Florida while completing the required courses and time requirements to become a fully accredited Class A club professional. We wish Tony all the best in his new career. Tony joins a lengthening list of youngsters who have decided to pursue a golf career after getting their start in Seaforth. Steve Bennett is the head professional at Sarnia Golf and Curling Club and is receiving a lot of attention, not just because of his success as a competing club pro, but also because of his influence on the very successful career of PGA Tour player, Mike Weir. Tartan chameleon Ian Doig is a teaching pro at Hunter's Glen and still competes occasionally on the Canadian Tour. . Chris Marion attended Georgian College in the Golf Management Program and Todd Doig graduated from Seneca as a Greens Superintendent. Dave Hiltz attendedcollege in Michigan on a golf scholarship and this fall Lindsay McEwin's golf scholarship will send her to Eastern Michigan University. As more and more people participate in golf as a recreational pastime, more and more job opportunities related to golf become available. You don't have to be a skilled golfer to pursue a golf -related career but knowledge of the game definitely helps when entering the world of golf business. These days you can make a good living in the following golf businesses: journalism for magazines, newspapers, internet sites and book writing; designing, manufacturing and selling golf equipment and apparel; marketing - golf trade shows and personnel management; events organizer - corporate tourneys, charity events, competitions; real estate development and sales; golf travel; lessons - teaching beginners, intermediate and advanced players; managing • golf properties - courses, clubs, resorts and condo properties; food and beverage and hospitality at golf facilities; developing software for any or all of the above golf businesses; and many, many more. Information about golf careers, golf scholarships and related topics is usually available from your local golf professional and guidance councillor.
