Centenaires' season better than anyone had hoped By Scott Hilgsndorff Expositor Editor The Seaforth Centenaires wrapped up their season better than coach Jason Papple could have hoped, taking the community along for a wild play-off ride. "Nobody could ask for any more," said Papple of the effort the team put into the season. While they were hoping to finish first in the division, the Jr. D team came up two points short but still surprised management and fans when they defeated a notoriously tough Port Stanley team in the second round of playoffs. That's where things fell apart for the Cents this season, which was supposed to be a rebuilding year after a dismal season last year. "Nobody would have put money on us beating Port Stanley," said Papple. But they did, giving it everything they had to win the series. "It probably cost us for the finals," said Papple. "Everybody put all their emotions and energy into that series. They didn't have anything left." The final playoff round ended earlier this month when the Cents took on Mt. Brydges but lost four straight games. Papple said players were tired, sick and injured for that Quoted 'Nobody could ask for any more,' -- Coach Jason Popple series apd didn't stand a chance. But he said they gave it everything they had left and, even though it wasn't enough for the win, he's still happy with the success of the team this year. Papple said fan -support for the season was great with crowds swelling in size and enthusiasm as the team progressed through the playoffs. "I think the guys really appreciated the way the town came out," said Papple. Throughout the regular season, as they adjusted their lines and moved players from different positions, Papple said there were times you could really see the team's playoff potential but that they weren't consistent with it throughout the regular season. "We tried a lot of different line combinations," he said. By the last week of the regular season, Papple said it all came together and everyone had found their roles on the team. While many players had theif moments during the season, Papple said Dublin's Chuck Robertson played net for every game in the playoffs and really showed his talent. In Game 6 against Lucan in the first playoff round, Papple said Robertson summed up his abilities with a final save that kept Lucan from putting the Cents out of the rest of the playoffs. He also said JD Nolan and Tim Sills had career seasons this year but that it's tough to say what kind of team will take shape next year as several players become over - aged. "Some younger ones will get a chance," he said, adding he anticipates a good season again next year. Business committee receives $3,00o grant for expansion The Seaforth Business Retention and Expansion (BR and E) committee received a $3,000 grant recently from the Huron Business Centre to expand into the rest of the recently -amalgamated municipality of Huron East. "It makes sense for the BR and E to figure out how to work with the new players in the community. The intention of the grant is to give them enough seed money to cover out- of-pocket costs like meetings costs and speakers," says Paul Nieol, of the Huron Business Centre. The grant will help the BR and E join with Business Improvement Area groups (BIAS) in Brussels and Vanastra, says BR and E spokesperson Gwen Devereaux. "We'd like to make it a BR and E for Huron East. We're hoping to all join together," she says. Nicol says Huron East's grant is one of nine grants given to communities throughout Huron County, all of which are approximately the same amount of money. The grant's purpose is to get businesses involved in economic development in their communities.
