Cents advance to finals
against Mt. Brydges
after seventh game win
After jumping out to a two -game lead in
second round playoff action, it appeared as if
the Cents may be in trouble as Port Stanley
answered back with three consecutive wins
to take a 3-2 series lead.
On Saturday Seaforth looked to stay alive
and came out with a fine effort:
Despite spending eight minutes
shorthanded in the first period, the Cents
survived a scoreless frame.
In the second period, Seaforth ran up to a
3-0 lead midway through on goals by Jeff
Maccuspey, Scott Henderson and Jeff
Arnold.
The Lakers fought back with two of their
own to close the gap until Matt Roberts
finished a scramble in front, sliding home his
first of the series to seal a 4-2 lead after 40
minutes.
The Cents pressed again in the third and
Scott Henderson struck 30 seconds in to
open the lead. Justin Riccardi and Joe
Nesbitt, with his first of the season, added
third -period tallies as the Cents sent the
series to game seven with a convincing
effort.
Sunday, back in Port Stanley, Seaforth
went looking to cap the upset.
Led by Chuck Robertson with a couple of
big saves early the locals pressed the Lakers
and got the first goal as Joe Nesbitt found
the loose puck on a scramble in the Laker
end and fired it home. Inspired by the
opening goal, Seaforth buzzed the Laker
zone and had several terrific chances.
Scott Van Dooren finished an odd man
rush for a 2-0 lead and Nesbitt closed the
period scoring with a power play marker as
he snuck in a backhander from the face-off
dot.
In the second period, it was Nesbitt again,
left open in -the slot for a pass from Tim
Sills.
The strong contingent of Seaforth fans
littered the ice with hats as the Cents
youngster celebrated his third of the night.
9i1s Port Stanley's frustration mounted the
Cents found themselves with a two-man
advantage allowing Van Dooren to sneak
back -door and open the score to 5-0 with 20
minutes to go.
One minute into the third, however some
soft play in'the Cents zone allowed Port
Stanley to sneak in a shorthanded goal which
sparked the Lakers and set the Cents back on
their heels.
Thirty seconds later, the power play failed
again and the Lakers made it 5-2.
The Lakers' top scoring line made their
way to the net once more at'the 16 -minute
mark tapping in their own rebound to narrow
the score to 5-3 before Seaforth regained
their composure.
Robertson sealed the pipes through the
final 15 minutes and A.J. Larivee fired an
empty netter ice -length with 12 seconds
remaining to complete the upset.
Seaforth ouishot the Lakers every game
through the series.
General Manager Dave Parsons was
thrilled with the upset and gave credit to the
entire lineup.
"The Lakers went after Henderson all
series. When he got tied up the rest of the
guys stepped up. It was a total team effort,"
he said.
The Cents advance to the YECK
conference finals against Mt. Brydges who
upset Thamesford in a seventh game also.
Next series: Wednesday at Mt. Brydges,
8:30 p.m.; Friday at Seaforth, 8 p.m. and
