'iia Clerk, Mr. Alex Murdock Weenie The following were nominated :Cor Reeve: n g+y. . Hudson.* G, ,C, PettyOweaudGelRobertrTirosilig, gins. Far the councils; ' Hobert MgAr- thur, A, Smith, C. Campbell, G; C. Petty, Robert Higgins and James Priest. School Trustees: Fred, Manns, Ed. Lindenfield and A. L. Case. Public Utilities. E. Rannne, As there was just enough nomin- ated to' fill the >offices 'of Scheel Trustees and • Public Utilities, were declared elected by acclamation. After the nomination proceedings were over, Mr. Murdock Wes ap- pointed chairman of the 'after meet- ing and called on the different can- didates to come to the platform. Reeve Geiger was first ,called on and gave an outline of the work of the cpuncil during the past year, and .also touched on the work of the County Council and gave an explan- ation of the drainage troubles: we have had in the town during , the past year, IVIr, Petty was then called on and accused Mr. Geiger. .; ;of being the cause of the .Priest Law Suit and should' be held responsible for the amount of money spent by the cor- poration in connection with that suit. Mr. Hudson and Mr. Campbell gave short addresses after which Mr Higgins was called on, and who gave an explanation of some of the trouble leading up • to the Priest Law. Snit and the ' Key's Drain Award, of which we .:twill speak of later, He also touched on the need of better fire protection and made some suggestions as to its improve- ment.. He also made a plea for the people of the village to get busy, and see if it would be possible to get something in the way of indus- tries here, to give work to our work- ing men as every man who is will- ing to work is entitled to .a job in this country and also to see if we couldn't find employment for our boys and girls rather than to allow them to go to the big American cit- ies seeking employment. Mr. Hig- gins did not receive much encour- agement from the other speakers in Um way of getting industries to the village, Mre Geiger apparently being totally' opposed to doing anything along those lines, and Mr. Hudson was in •favor of going slow. Mr. Higgins was in favor of making a start in the way of industries, by the starting of a cheese, or butter fac- tory here in the village in the spring On Tuesday evening at 9 o'clock Thos. Hudson and Owen Geiger had qualified for the Reeveship and Ro- bert McArthur, Chris. Campbell, J. Priest and Robert Higgins for the council. The councilw s a declared e elected by acclamation and election for reeve will be held next Monday. A good deal of disccussion has take place in the village as to the rights of the council in their ectien of charging;,; the cost of the Priest Law Suit up against those whom the drain benefits or against the whole corporation, and after look- ing over the Referee's award we. claim that it was his intention that the Corporationsho'ild pay the cost. The award was''' as follows:—It is ordered that the council of the De- fendant Corporation of Hensall do procure the report of an engineer, providing for the improvement of the drainage work constructed un - dei By -Law Number 3 of 1905, of the Said Village of Hensall, by add- ing a loop to the tile drain con- structed under the provisions of the said By -Laws, connecting with the said tile drain at a point oppo- site Lot Number 271, Moir's Survey, and extending then across the re- maining portion of „Richmond St., and the adjacent Lot Number 270, with •a radius of forty feet, until it again connects with the said tile drain, and do proceed within a rea- sonable time to the Construction of th'e said loop. And it is further ordered that the costs of it and incidental to this sec- tion be paid by the said Corporation and be chargeable as a portion of said loop. We, claim that the people living along by the drain were not respon- sible if the drama was not put in right in the first place, and that the Corporation was liable if the council' and the inspector of that time did not do their duty. .It was up to the Corporation to rectify the mistake and not charge the cost up to the people who' originally paid for the drain. As for the Keyes Drain Award when Mr.. Keys appeared before the council and asked for an outlet, his intentions was that the water should go on its proper course through the Burn's property, and he never ask- ed that the water sould be run up- hill to King Street and a $7000.00 drain dug .down . the north side of King St. to accommodate the little water coming from ' his place. No one ever asked for, of petitioned for the big drain and, apparently no one wanted it. WOODHAM Mr. Howard Black, Of London, is spending, the holidays with his Par - ants, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Black.
