Once upon a time there was
a talking Christmas tree.
Santa thought he would get a
Christmas tree for his house
'this year. it just so happened
that he got the talking
Christmas tree. But nobody
knew that it could could talk.
One day thc tree talked to
Santa but it told him not to
tell Mrs. Santa. livery day
Santa got upreally early so
he could tak to the talking
tree. On one of those days he
got up from bed to talk to the
tree Mrs. Santa heard him so
she followed him. She saw
him talking to the tree. Mrs.
Santa said to Santa, "I don't
like ,our talking tree. Oct rid
of it. '
On,Christmas Eve Santa
thought his wife was going
to burn the tree so he hmught
it with him on thc sleigh. it
was a tight squeeze but it
was all right. It was really
pointy.
When he got home Mrs.
Santa was gone. All her stuff
was gone too. That meant
she moved. So he started to
look for her. He finally found
her working on a farm. She
was on a cow farm. When he
found her she was milking
the cows and sweeping the
aisles. Santa said, "Come
home with me." But she
said, "No! i will only come
home if you get rid of the
talking tree." He said. "Ok "
So she came home with him.
When they got home Santa
brought the tree hack to the
store. They lived happily
ever after and that was the
end of the talking Christmas
tree.

I recently received a Civic Service Award presented by the Seaforth
J h Recreation Committee. 1 gave an acceptance speech at tile BIA Christmas
party and 1 would like to share that speech with the community at large:
t'm very happy to accept this citizenship award because it comes from a
community that alt can admire. It comes from a community that, once again, pulled L
together and met the big challenge. Our high school remains open.
In looking back over this community's three year struggle to retain our high school one
cannot but be proud to be part of our community. In the beginning only a handful of
people were involved but in time the community rallied and all involved should be given
credit for their efforts. So many people contributed to the success of our'efforts to save
Seaforth's High School that I'll probably miss someone in my attempt M thank them all, so for
that t apologize in advance to anyone who is missed.
Thanks to the School Councils at the High School and Seaforth Public School.
Thanks to the Town's Mayor Dave and the council.
Thanks to all who attended the community meetings called by the school's supporters.
Thanks to all who made presentation to the Board, or who wrote letters, phoned, faxed, emailed or
who pitched in otherwise.
Thanks to teachers and other school staff who by necessity had to work away quietly in the
background but who nonetheless made significant contributions.
Thanks to our Accommodation Review Committee who had the courage to offer compromise.
Thanks to my family and employees, without whom my efforts would have been impossible.
This community has set a wonderful example for our young people. They set that example by standing
up for what is right and getting the job done. But the students of this community also set a wonderful
example. Whether in school, while marching in protest down Main Street, while making presentations
before the Board or in court: the youth of this community conducted themselves with
commendable dignity and grace. •
In the end all pleas of reason and passion failed and it was necessary to take the Board to court. Five
individuals stepped forward and filed a complaint in our court system. To the other four 1 can only
offer praise and thanks. In don't think a complaint with only one name on it would have had the
same chance at success. This award 1 have been given tonight also belongs to those brave people:
Maureen Agar, Carolanne Doig, Alf Ross and Dave Scott. . ■
Thanks is also very much due to the legal team that represented this community in court. I •
= may have been the spearhead, but the spear was carefully crafted by Fred Leitch, Cord
fa
-1 Lemon and Hugh McDonald, and on an historical day in the spring of this y?ar, Fred hook
our spear into court and hurled it straight to the heart of the Target.
1 have been given this award, but feel compelled to ask for more. m
1 want to be -a good and effective School Board liustee. If 1 am to be successful in
that endeavour 1 will need the help of this community. It is important that
delegations continue to appear before the Board to address a number of
issues. it is important that our school councils remain active, so join in. It
is important to continue efforts to expand our legal fund, and it is most -
important that we all remain vigilant. So 1 thank the community
for the Award s, Nile asking the community to sustain its 1 •
torts in support of our schools. it
