No concerns about proposed,
bridge work in Dublin
By Scott Hilgendorff
Expositor Editor
White work won't actually
start until probably 2002. the
Dublin community had a
c'hance to respond to
proposed plans for' replacing
the Liffy Drain Bridge on
Highway 8. , .. .
-While several options for
rerouting traffic were
explored. the Ministry of
Transportation unveiled its
preferred plan at, a public
meeting held 'Oct. 25 at St.
Patrick's School in Dublin:
"For a period of about four
or five months. there'd be a
traffic light and one' lane
across the bridge." said
Andrew Turnhul,l. a .
Ctructural engineer with the
Ministry.
"All of this is preliminary.
We're looking atall the
options." he said.

While the Ministry of
Transportation has.
determined its preferred
option, concerns from the
public could lead the
ministry to look at another
option.
However. only four people
from the community
•attendcd with 'no major
Concerns about the bridge
construction or the preferred
option.
"There wasn't much
interest shown' which means.
there's not -toomany issues
to be concerned with'," said
Turnbull: -
The preferred option
reduces the environmental
impacts . of having to
• construct a temporary bridge
and roadway that reroutes
traffic around the bridge and
reconnects them to Highway
' 8 at the edge of Dublin.
Other options send traffic
- -
on longer detours around the
community. . y:
The preferred option
allows one half of the bridge
to be built at a time. creating
a single -lane bridge
controlled by a trtftic light.
. The idea of the meeting
was to identify ally concerns
-before the project proceeds
to a preliminary design stage.
Those ' • designs are
expected to be complete-by------
the
omplete by -----the end of February and will
include the type of structure
that willbe built in place of
the. current bridge which has
deteriorated to a• degree
where. the Ministry of
Transportation •has
determined it must he
replaced... •
ft is.at too early. a stage to
determine.the cost of the
bridge replacement. project.
