Goderich mayor
joins fight to keep
ambulances
By Scott Hilgendorff
. Expositor Editor l —
Goderich mayor Deb
Shewtelt is: joining the tight to
step Huron County Council
from going ahead with its
ambulance system restructuring
plans.
. • 'To me. well be spending
the savings on inquests," he
said .• of the possibility
ambulances will. be
unnecessarily late to emergency
calls. resulting in public
tngtitries under the new system.'
``it`s quite clear it's nothing
- -bur a cutback." said Shewfelt.
no doesn't .believethe
changes the county has made to
the system are designed to
make it more' efficient and
:^goer -run.
.At no time. has he heard
anyone at the county -level refer
tto patient or health care in
designing the new system:
.As details of the county's
pian' continue to evolve. the
situation now sees. Seaforth's _
ambulance service not only •
-nosed to a Highway 8 location
hut the hour ot.servtce cut. .•
The Seaforth ambulance
.i.ttton amalgamates 'with
Canton's and will be staffed in
the davuine until 6 p.m. with an
.n -call ambulance after that. •
The. new system takes effect
Jan.1 at. which time the
Seaforth ambulance base will
;:lost:, While a:permanent
"-station has not 'been built.
rumour have circulated that
temporar facilities will be set
up with .paramedics using
portable washrooms on site
until permanent buildings are in.
hew felt finds the move
anaccectahte and thinks the
.ount should have waited. on
makin_ a decision about the
fate of the. ambulance system
until• a had some ;me to get
used.to running the system it
inherits tmm the province at the
start c'i _(X)..,.
"It's a fancy plan .tor a

on a unto council at the first
•'neettng of the new year and
hinis :he county :should
reconsider at that time how the
ambulance er•vice is run.
.'Why the tush to get nd of
this," said Shewfelt of the
current system.
Perth County Council has
decided to let its ambulance
system operate as is until it has
had time to look at what it
needs to know to operate a
system effectively.
• Shewfelt, acclaimed as
mayor in .Goderich, joins
county council Jan. 1 to
represent the town. He flatly
-supports Seaforth Reeve Lin
Stefer in her push to have the
ambulance services linked with
the hospitals.
Seaforth. Community
Hospital had offered td-
reconstruct
dreconstruct a state -of -the -art -
facility, linked to the hospital. if
the county would leave the
atnlgilance service in Seaforth.
Shewfelt ;aid the Goderich
hospital. which is undergoing
major renovations. is
considering the same plan. -
Goderich's ambulance will
be relocated about 'two
kilometres away to the Village'
of,Saltford under the new plan.
Shewfelt said Goderich
representatives -had wanted to
piesent this option at count.'
'council ,tomorrow t Nbv.. 2) but
.were. first told they would have
• to present it at the committee
level next month.
•
.Shewfelt said they pushed
the rules of how a meeting is
operated which requires only
two day's notice • to be placed •
on act agenda•and that the group
will now present_ the Wan
Thurday atter all,
Shewfelt believes the current
ambulance planis being driven
bv`.administration' without
taking'senousiv concerns from
the public; ambulance operators
or paramedics:
tie ` toured the , area's
ambulance stations Monday
and Tuesday_ to .learn more
about their operations and
intends. to fight the •county
council decision beginning with,
the first meeting in January.
He expects new faces on the
council will Join the ,tight as
\ell.
•''T'm not `_crop tip (;inn

anything to do with this. 1'tn
