Steckle acclaimed as Huron -Bruce Liberal candidate for federal election By Amy Zoeqout • Lucknow Sentinel Editor The Huron -Bruce Liberals hive onch-again chosen MP Paul Steckle to represent them in the next federal election. Incumbent Steckle was acclaimed at a Huron -Bruce Federal Liberal Assofiation meeting held in .Lucknow pn Sept. 13. "I am responsible for one of the greatest ridings and I take this responsibility very seriously." Steckle told the shtall group of supporters gathered at the Lucknow Legion. "I treasure the honour you have bestowed on me." While Steckle said only the Prime Minister knows when an election will be called. he thought an election may be called for next spring or fall. Steckle was first elected to represent Huron -Bruce in Ottawa in 1993 and was re- elected in 1997. Prior. to enterini federal politics, Steckle served on council in his native Stanley Twp. He was reeve in the township from 1980-85 and warden of Huron County in 1985. "I hope I can live up to what people think I can deliver," said Steckle. "It's always a challenge as we as elected people go forward to represent our constituencies and to try and bring some sort of balancg to what people would want us to do for them because everyone has an issue that seems very important to them and we try to bring representation to those issues." . He added that. from time to time, issues are brought before members of parliament that are difficult to support, even though constituents wish to support, making it "difficult to know what we should do." Steckle noted, that some politicians feel polls should be used to settle issues. "Elections areimportant recall mechanisms," said see .r SAVE WAYS: 1 We're blowing out inventory on Canada's best Lawn & Garden Tractors! HUGE Sale Prices plus... Extra Factory Rebates' plus... "I feel it's important that those who represent constituents for re-election purposes ought to know what is going on...not 30 days before the electionbut the number of years before - when we represent the constituents on a day to day basis, when we meet the people in our office and on the streets and on the back roads. These are the kinds of times when we find out what people are thinking. I have tried to bring that kind of representation to this riding. "I realize I have failed at, times," he said. "I am only one member and only do what one member can do." In the last seven years since the Liberal Party came to power, the.deficit has been eliminated but they are now faced with a sizable surplus. Steckle noted that the difficulty is knowing what to do with the money. Many believe the surplus should he spent to enhance government programs. he said. while others believe the government should he fiscally responsible and use the surplus towards the national debt. "I think the consensus was that it is time to do what we can to pay back some of the debt as quickly as possible." said Steckle. adding that along with that must come some tax deductions. "It is our responsibility to bring good government. provide safe streets. and provide an economy where people wish to move forward and not constantly wonder if they s ould move across border tb the United Staes." -HEALTH ON THE HILL - A Review of activities at SEAFORTH COMMUNITY HOSPITAL HOSPITAL AUXILIARY BURSARY, We are delighted to announce that Crista VandenHoven, a long standing Student Volunteer with our Hospital, was the lucky recipient of this year's bursary.
