Students fight
to get back
in high school
Despite declining enrolment,
principal wants students
to prove themselves first
By Susan Hundortmark

With decreasing enrolment one of the main reasons the
Avon Maitland District School Board tried to close Seaforth
District High School earlier this year. several students are
asking why they were denied permission to enrol in the
school this fall. •
Tadd Snuth, 18, of Walton and Kase)..Adair. '17. of Dublin,
both dropped out of school last year from SDHS but were not
allowed to enrol for school when they attempted to do so the
first week of September. •
The two, along with several friends. have written a petition:
which they are passing
through the student
population at SDHS and plan
to post at the Seaforth post
office to collect signatures.
"About. 50 people have
signed it so far, both students
and adults, says Belinda
Sharpe, a friend of Smith and
Adair who is involved in
organizing the petition. .
She says the petition state's
that as -many as seven
students; all of whom had
dropped out of school earlier.
tried 'to enrol at SDHS this
fall and were turned away.
She adds. those organizing the petition hope to present the ..
signatures at a school board meeting sometime in Octbber.
While Smith was accepted into Grade 11 at St. Anne's
Secondary School in Clinton. Sharpe says six of the seven
students could return to SDHS if they were accepted.
Smith says he met with SDHS principal Jeff Reaburn every
day for one and a half weeks in an attempt to enrol at SDHS
this fall. After dropping out last year to find a job when he
became a parent., Smith says he's ready to return to school .
this year.

kid.'The principal at St. Anne's said. 'That's a- blessing and
we like your attitude.' But. the principal at Seaforth said. `1 -

Smith says he did not want to go to, an adult education
class, as Reaburn suggested:

Coaches not ready to cancel fall season
By Matt Shuffle

The Huron -Perth fall
sports season has been
suspended but those who
attended a special meeting of
the Huron -Perth Athletic
Association (HPAA) Monday
night in Mitchell say the
season has not been
cancelled.
"We've just continued
what we decided in April.
which is to suspend things
until we get to a situation
where we have enough
convenors and coaches." said
Seaforth District High
School coach Terry Johnston.
"We are not cancelling
anything because if
something were to break in
the next few weeks we would
see what we could do to
salvage the season."
The Huron -Perth decision
to suspend rather than cancel
comes on the heels of action
taken by the Thames Valley
District School Board and
the
Bruce Athletic Association
to cancel their respective
seasons. -
"it's hard to explain to
kids, it's hard to explain to
parents, -
sometimes it's • hard to
understand yourself." said
HPAA executive director
Bob Ellison.
Prior to Monday's decision
to suspend the season.
Ellison said the HPAA would
avoid'. cancelling the entire
sports season meaning a
glimmer of hope remains for
local athletes.
"The idea rs we're not
cancelling the entire sports
year but it's .liketwo years
ago but in a worse way," said
Ellison. "To be
honest 1 can't see an end in
sight."
