Local golfers take part in first
round of club championships
. Watching golf is a passion for many.
Some are content to relax on the
couch and let the cameraman do the
work and the commentator keep you
up to date.
Other golf fans will travel for miles
to watch their favourite players in
person. They usually have to spend a
small fortu a for a ticket to get in, more
money for p rking, and a ludicrous sum for a
burger and a beer.
Here in Southwestern Ontario access to a
number of professional golf events is not
difficult.
Recently I visited the PGA tour at the
Buick Open in Flint, a mere two -and -a -half
hours away. Cast week, I was in East Lansing
where Karrie Webb was matching Tiger's 61
- again just a few hours away.
Next week, the Bell Canadian Open will be
held in Glen Abbey for the last time in at
least Live years. A two-hour drive will get you
there. Many of the top players on the tour will
compete for the prize money and prestige of
an "Open" title. The practice round is Sept. 5,
pie pro -am Sept. 6 and competition goes from
Sept. 7-10. Tickets are available at the gate.
- The following week, the Canadian Tour
will he at Huron Oaks in Sarnia. The
•Canadian Tour has been the training ground
for many professionals who have used it as a
spring -hoard into the Buy.com and PGA
tours.
• Huron Oaks, of course, •was.the training
ground for Canada's top player on the PGA
Tour. Mike Weir.
"Once again, tickets are available at the gate,
so golf fans may want to take this short one-
hour -drive to see this event on the Canadian
Tour.
