Huron Expositor, 2000-08-30, Page 13NASH, Jim: In loving memory of a dear father. father-in-law & grand- pa. Jim Nash, whom God laid to rest 3 years ago. August 28. 1997. Ever Close in Mind and Heart. No further away than a picture. A smile or remembered phrase, Our loved ones live in memory. So close in so many ways. For how often does a sunset Bring nostalgic thoughts to mind, Of moments that our loved ones shared, In days now left behind. How often has a fiower Or a crystal autymn sky, Brought golden recollections Of happy days gone by. Yes, memory has a magic way Of keeping loved ones near, Ever close in mind and heart Are the ones we hold most dear. Sending all our love Dad, Tammy, Grant & Megan McKellar, 46-35.1 FLANAGAN: Brian, August 30, 1981. Though absent you are very near. Still loved and missed and ever dear. Fondest memories, Mom, Dad and Family. 46-35x1 KNIGHTS: In loving memory of a dear father, grandfather and great grandfather. Reginald Knights who passed away 2 , years ago, September 1, 1998. Loving memories never die. As years roll on and days pass by. In our hearts a memory is kept. Of the one we loved and will never forget. Lovingly remembered by Jim. Joanne and families. 46-35x1 HAYTER In loving memory of a dear son, brother, brother-in-law and uncle, Jamie, who left us so suddenly on September 5, 1999. We often lay awake at night, When the world is fast asleep. And take a walk down memory lane, With tears upon our cheeks. The years we had with you, Are worth their weight in gold, The joy and laughter that you gave, Are ours to have and hold. Remembering you is easy, We do it every day, But missing you is a heartache, That never goes away. We hold you close within our hearts, And there you will remain, To walk with us throughout our life, Until we meet again. To those of you who have a son, • Love him while you may, For how we wish with all our hearts, We had ours here today. We love you and miss you very much, Jamie. • - Love Dad. Mom, Jeff, Jason and Lisa, Joanne, Jim and your nephew Owen. 46-35x l cc HILDEBRAND: In loving memory of a dear Dad and Papa, George Hildebrand who passed away eight years ago. August 29, 1992. Remember him with a smile today, He was not one for tears. Reflect instead on memories. Of all the happy years. We can to mind the way he spoke, And all the things he said, His strength. his courage and the way he loved us. Remember that instead. The good advice he gave us. His eyes that shone with laughter. So much of him that never died, But lives on ever after. • Lovingly remembered and sadly missed by Ruth, Steve, Jennie and Emily. 46-35x1 HILDEBRAND: In loving memory of a dear husband. George who passed away on August 29. 1992. Those we love must someday pass: beyond our present sight. Must leave us and the world we know, without their radiant light. But we know that like a candle, - their lovely light will shine. To brighten up another place. more pertect....more divine. And in the realm of Heaven. where they shine so warm and bright, Our loved ones live forevermore, In God's etemal light. Lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife Hazel 46-36x1 MCCREIGHT: In loving memory of Matt. dear husband, father and grandfather. who passed away Sept. 4, 1999. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there. I did not die. 1 am a thousand winds that blow. 1 am the diamond glint on snow. When you awaken in the moming hush, I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am bnght stars that shine at night. Clowns have been therapeutic for dying From Page 1 Another time, a dying patient spent some time talking to Beany's hand puppet about her feelings about her illness because she found it difficult to talk to anyone else. "Everybody turns away from you when you're dying because they don't want to talk about it or they just don't know what to say. I have no answers but I'm there. Everyone's a living being until they kick dirt in your face," says Willows. She's also been able to bring a smile to patients as a patient herself. Once while drivi'ngto, a clowning engagement in costume, Willows skidded on black ice and flipped her car. While hanging upsidedown in the car by her seatbelt waiting for help, a school bus stopped and she heard a little boy saying, "Look, it's a clown." His words helped her laugh at her own situation, even when the police, firefighters and ambulance showed up and even while she was wheeled into emergency at Stratford General Hospital with some minor injuries in her clown costume. The hospital staff took her picture on the stretcher and put it in the hospital newletter with the caption, "Even Beany has bad days. Willows says she loves clowning in nursing homes as well, where she says . Beany always gets a warm reception. • "They just love to have' hugs and someone to talk to at nursing homes," she says. She loves handing out unbirthday cards (cards that celebrate you're alive on every day other than your birthday) and joke cannisters, such as a donut tree kit, a can full of cheerios with instructions to plant near a Community Calendar WED., AUG. 30 SAT., SEPT. 2 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. - Lakers Minor Bantam Hockey Tournament SUN., SEPT. 3 MON., SEPT. 4 7:15 p.m. - Minor Sports Council DOUBLES BINGO at the Arena. "You should still have enjoyment no matter how old you are or how sick you are," she says. However, she says that care clowns never force themselves on anyone and always ask to be invited. She says they also never make anyone other than themselves or other clowns the brunt of their jokes. Willows says laughter as a healing therapy has been a growing movement since the 1960s when Norman Cousins, author of Anatomy of an Illness, discovered during a battle with a severe illness that 10 minutes of belly laughs could give him two hours without pain. But, she adds that the idea of laughter as an anaesthetic goes back to the days of ancient Greece with Plato and Socrates. As well, she points to the use of court jesters in medieval times to aid digestion. Care clowning is popular in hospitals throughout North America and Willows says New York City has one of the best programs in the Big Apple Care Clown Unit. which has 35 professional performers who visit in hospitals. However, she says some doctors still "look at you as if you're a voodoo doctor," she says. loann'e Gallagher, who organized the recent clowning course at Seaforth Community Hospital. says the aim of the course is to create a local pool of care clowns to visit hospital patients and nursing home residents throughout Huron and Penh Counties. "If a family or a nurse contacts us. we'll dispatch the clowns to cheer them up." says Gallagher. who took the- course hecourse and has become a - clown herself. "It's documented that the endorphins your body makes when laughing helps with healing. It's also about healing the whole spirit:" she says.
