Official `switch on'
ceremony in Clinton
From Pogo 1
years to complete, said
Lawson. which is the usual
amount of time it has taken
other counties.
A. five digit numbering
system was decided upon. to
strike an appropriate balance
between leaving room for
future growth and
maintaining consistency.
The white -on -blue colour
scheme used on the address
signs. which can now be seen
throughout the county. was
determined to have the best
visibility in. all seasons.
especially against a green
landscape.
There was also a need for a
simple naming system to
identify all the roads in the
county. Naturally. that meant
every municipality could
assign historic or otherwise
significant labels to the
networks by which they
traveled.
Some roads. such as
Goshen Line. are named for
the forgotten colonial hamlets
through which they passed
during the day of the
pioneers. Others. like the
Playhouse Line. arise from
landmarks that are to this day
important parts of the
community.
A fact many people
probably don't know is the
911 signs are made.in the
county and will be in the
future. Residents should
report missing signs to their
municipalities and they will
be replaced within 48 hours.
Once 911 takes effect, local
emergency numbers may still
work. The operators of the
numbers currently in place
911 tips
The county has a couple
of helpful reminders for
residents to think about.
Rural residents with
security systems are
reminded to phone their
security company tonotify
them the new number to
contact in case of an
emergency is 911 and their
new emergency response.
address.
This is one step many
residents just may forget
about, said County
Engineer, Sandra Lawson.
Residents are also
reminded when they are
addressing their mail and
they live on a rural route
they still need to include
their rural route number
with their postal code, not
just their 911 address.
have the option of deciding
how long they want to
continue. This could range
from a month to two years
after the 911 service starts.
There's numerous benefits
to 911 service. said Lawson,
cottagers mostly from urban
areas will have a familiar
number to call and babysitters
will just have one number to
memorize.
Starting in the fall. a county
representative will be visiting
schools with the fire
departments to promote the
use of the 911 number for
kindergarten to Grade 2 with
colouring books.
"The best way of reaching
parents is through their
children." said Lawson.
Features of the new
enhanced 9,11 system include
a computer system that shows
the caller's address, the name
of the municipality and/or
subdivision as soon as the call
is placed. Even if you aren't
able to speak or stay at the
phone, emergency services
will still get to your location.
It is still advised to
memorize your 911 address as
you may phone from a
cellular phone or a
neighbour's house.
If you accidentally hang up
before the call is finished, the
call -taker can call you back
immediately. This also cuts
down on prank calls that tie
up the phone lines.
Emergency dispatch
services are available 24
hours a day. seven days a
week year round.
The creation of the new
emergency response system'
has been made possible by the
efforts, time and resources of
the County of Huron and all
its municipalities, Huron Tel
Communications Inc..
Wightman Communications
Inc., Quadro Communications
Inc.. Hay Communiciations
Inc., and Tuckersmith
Communications Inc.; and
Bell Canada. which will
administer the system after its
initiation.
Lawson was unsure how
much money has been spent
to bring 911 to Huron Couhty.
Safety concerns far outweigh
the costs of what it has taken
to implement the 911
program, said Lawson.
All residents and visitors of
the county are invited to
attend for lunch, refreshments
and to witness the historic
ceremonial activation by
Huron County Warden Carol
Mitchell.
