holding
tryouts
as they
work
to reach
playoffs
this year
The Seaforth
Centenaires Jr. D hockey
club hits the ice this week
with open tryouts this
Thursday at 9 p.m. The
Cents are hoping to
improve on their record
from last season where
they failed to make the
playoffs by two points
after struggling all season
• with the league's youngest
lineup.
There was concern the
,team would not have
enough executive to
operate this season but
General Manager, Dave
Parsons ensures us that the
executive. is in place.
"although more volunteers
are always welcome."
A good turnout is
expected at the Cents
training camp. More than
100 invitations have been
sent out and Parsons said,
"we expect some key
players to be there this
year."
Aside from losing a few
players to age, the team
expects the core of the
team to return this season.
Returning coach Jason
Papple says he is
expecting improvement in'
this year's team. "We will
still have a young team
but now they are a young
team with a bit of
experience," he said.
The league has
undergone some major
changes over the summer.
Lambeth has withdrawn
its entry for the season
leaving the two divisions
from last season
amalgamated into one.
Nine teams will now
battle for eight playoff
spots.
Also changing is the
rule regarding an
pass.
The Junior
Development League has
removed the red line this
season following the lead
from Junior B last year.
Papple was not sure how
the rule change will affect
the style of play.
"The intent is to open
up the offense, but I'm
sure some teams will just
lay back to avoid making
mistakes. It will take some
adjusting," he said.
Any player interested in
trying out, should kring a
permission to skate form
to the Seaforth Arena,
Aug. 31 at 9 p.m.

Junior Hockey League's top
draft picks last year to play
in the upcoming 2000-2001
hockey season.
Justin Riccardi, who toiled
for the Orlando Sun of the
Southern Elite Junior Hockey
League last year, has agreed
to join the Cents of the
Junior Development (Jr.D)
League this season.
Riccardi has been touted
by manymajor colleges in
the U.S. and has been invited
to attend the Jr. A Sarnia
Sting's training camp this
week.
A welcomed addition to
the Cents, Justin plans to
attend school in Waterloo this
year and forego the
scheduling and playing
rigors of Junior A and Junior
B hockey.
The Centenaires opened its
training camp yesterday,
Aug. 29 and it continues this
Thursday, Aug. 31 at the
