r for the town.
A "The college took our need
and created it as a project for
one of their classes. It was an
opportunity to have young
upcoming fresh ideas and
different perspectives," he says
: of the students' participation.
Lavoie sat in on the grading
of the students' nine finished
pages and from there chose the
one website design to be used
by the town on the internet.
i°.
:That finished project was a
starting point for us and our
website," he says.
The three students who
created the webpage were
.. given a luncheon and tour of
the town by the BR and E and
certificates of appreciation were
presented to all the participating
stude t
n s.
The BR,and E also made
donations to the college
towards textbook purchases
and gave the students gift
certificates to the college
bookstore.
"The webpage project could
be a springboard for other
opportunities with the BR and
E. We hope to continue a work
placement with the
microcomputer adminstration
program to maybe develop
brochures for the town or the
hospital foundation. There are a
lot of opportunities out there
where the town can benefit
from the partnership," says
Lavoie.
He says the BR and E is
planning a meeting this fall
with the college to discuss the
future of a continuing
partnership.
However, Seaforth's deputy
clerk Cathy Garrick says no
one has yet been assigned
responsibility for updating the
town's website.
"That's one of the bugs that's
going to be worked out. I
haven't had a chance to look at
the manual yet and the BR and
E took the summer off. It will
be on the September agenda,'
she says.
She adds that while the site is
up and running, not every
webpage can be accessed.
While visitors to the town's
website can obtain some
information about tourist
information and link into the
Seaforth Library and The
Huron Expositor's websites,
files on the town, the hospital,
business and economic
development cannot yet be
accessed.
"Any group mentioned on
the site is going to be
responsible for providing the
updated information but it
hasn't been decided yet who's
going to make sure it's on the
webpage," says Garrick.
She addsthat any
community member willing to
volunteer his or her services to
update the website can call
town hall.
Lavoie says that the BR and
E still has some ideas it hasn't
used yet to make the town's
website "fresh and fun" such as
cyber postcards, where visitors
to the website can choose a
picture of Seaforth and e-mail
it.
"We haven't revealed all yet.
Keep watching for further
developments," he says. '
Business can receive training
on how to make use of internet
While the Business Retention and Expansion Committee has
been promoting the use of the internet and e-commerce to the
local business community, CAP (Community Access Program)
has someone in place to help businesses use the internet.
Jonathan Elston has been hired through the CAP program to
be at both the Seaforth Public Library and the Huron Business
Centre on Main Street in Seaforth to help promote e-
• commerce.
Elston is working from both facilities to help business
T., people make use of the internet.
"I help businesses through teaching them use of the internet
and search engines to increase productivity," said Elston.
The Community Acness. Program is an Industry. Cajada
initiative that works to ensure people across the country have
free access to the Internet.
It originally developed 5,000 free access locations across
rural and remote locations of Canada and has now doubled
those access points.
Seaforth's CAP site is the Seaforth Public Library where
people can book appointments for free internet access and for
help from Elston learning to use the technology and how to use
the internet to access resources and information..
Elston is found most days at the library but is also assigned
to the Huron Business Centre on Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m.
to 8 p.m. to help the business community.
Free internet access is also available from there but with a
focus on the business community where people can come and
use the internet to search for employment or help their
business.
Elston is also designing a web page for CAP's Seaforth site.
"It brings all the Seaforth web sites together," he said,
adding it provides a central place for people to go to find all
that Seaforth has to offer on-line from the library's home page
to business and community groups.
He is encouraging people to make him aware of their web
sites so they can be included as (inks on the CAP page.
Elston will be available to help people until Oct. 31.
For appointments, they should call the library.
