his family and friends went
to the women's section where
Fouzie was brought to him.
. "She was looking very
pretty and I thought they had
made a good choice." he
says.
Gift -giving, follow's and
Fouzie was taken to Farhan's
home to live and be
welcomed b'y his family.
Gift -giving and feasting
continues" on the -third day .
when Fouzie's family came .
to Farhan's family home.
"They' give:us every single -
thing to start a new life - 50
items. of clothing, watches
and Jewell*. and money for
moving. Then. there's
another big meal where 300
people come to wish us good
-luck.• says Farhan.
Despite the complete lack
of contact before the'
wedding. Farhan says it s
didn't take long for them to
"develop a close relationship.
"In about 15-20 days we F
were real. good friends." he
Says. .
"I think just one day." adds'.
Fouzie: `'F felt we knew each t
other for centuries."
While Farhan returned to ,
Canada shortly after the
ceremony'. Fouzie didn't. join" " a
wedding dress that took 2 )/
him for three months. But.
the two had long telephone
calls - Farhan estimates he
spent up to 5800 in long
distance bills during a month
and a half when. they
"shared everything" about
their lives.
"We're getting along now.
ver• nice." says Fouzie;
And. while they sometiri)es
miss their family homes'in
Pakistan./where extended
families all live together in
large eight -bedroom- homes.
they don't miss the 50 degree
Celsius weather in the
summertime: -
"The heat is terrible in our
country. It gets so hot the
roads melt,and it starts in
April and ends in October.
You haveto cover yourself
up and people can get faint
and die'just by walking."
ays Farhan.
And. while he -admits
Canadian winters. are cold.
arhan insists the.weather- is
great in Calada.
His one complaint about
western culture.is the fact
hat old -people do not live
with their families -
"F m very sad to see old
