also spoke at the event and
gale weft owners a lesson in
proper well construction and
,maintenance. Since .last
month. he said. 3.400 water
.amples have been tested.
with '40 per cent containing
bacteria. / r
Common, -causes of well
contamination. he said. are

improper 'seals. surface
water. holes. unsealed joints
and.cracks allowing bugs.
•animal. or debris inside the
well. and improper Materials
-such as manure or fertilizer
near the surface of the well.
Wells that aren't .sealed'
properly can also lead to
accidents. Yee said: People
or.animals may:
leading to injury of death.
According to Yee, land
owners are responsible for
the condition of all wells'on
their -property. including
those that are abandoned...
"No • matter who
constructed it, once that
well is complete. the owner
i' -responsible for that and
any other well» on their
property. whether they Out it
there or not:" he said.
7Own/rs are liable to.
prosecution if the welis on .
their property aren't

Regular well maintain»ance
will keep minerals, algae.
and deposits.from affecting
water quality. and will save.
money in the long run on
repairs. Seeger said.
Testing the -water on a
regular basis is also advised
to ensure it is safe to drink,
Seeger said. Dug wells
should he tested monthly for
the firstyear, then two to
three times per year after,
and drilled' wells should be
tested twice- a year on
alternating opposite seasons.
Seeger also noted that water
should -be tested if there is
any` noticeable change in
taste, odor, colour,or clarity,
if there is an unexplained
illness in the family, it there
are any noticeable changes
in livestock or poultry
performance or if there. is• a
pregnancy/in the family. ,.
Also, water should be
tested if neighbors find
contatftinants in their water,.
chemicals or manure is
applied to afield within 100
feet of the well. if there is a
change in the use Of land
nearby or a. new well is
drilled. r . r
/ Those on a communal•
well system! should have
their water tested if a new
house joins the system,. if
repairs or alterations are
mmde to the system and at
the start up of the system,
after being idle for a few
mdnths. ,
When testing the water.
Seeger said. it is .important
to follow proper procedures.
Any aerators, treatment
devices or hoses should. be
removed from the drinking
water faucet: The area
arounii the inside of the.
faucetspout should - be
disinfected with a flame
.from a match or lighter, and
left uptouched. Next. the tap
should be turned on and left
to run for two minutes,' and
with the water still running,
the testing bottle should be
filled to its indicator line,
takingcare not to touch the
inside of the cap or the
mouth of the bottle. Any
powder or tablet inside
should be kept, and not
rinsed away. After replacing
the cap, the bottle should be
refrigerated until the saniple
can be` delivered to 'the'
-iappropriate drop off
location. • - ' » -
Yee warned that water
filteringdevices such as
Brita filters are not an
effective 'solution in
/removing. bacteria ••and
