Wells that aren't .sealed' properly can also lead to accidents. Yee said: People or.animals may: leading to injury of death. According to Yee, land owners are responsible for the condition of all wells'on their -property. including those that are abandoned... Seeger said. Testing the -water on a regular basis is also advised to ensure it is safe to drink, Seeger said. Dug wells should he tested monthly for the firstyear, then two to three times per year after, and drilled' wells should be tested twice- a year on alternating opposite seasons. Seeger also noted that water should -be tested if there is any` noticeable change in taste, odor, colour,or clarity, if there is an unexplained illness in the family, it there are any noticeable changes in livestock or poultry performance or if there. is• a pregnancy/in the family. ,. Also, water should be tested if neighbors find contatftinants in their water,. chemicals or manure is applied to afield within 100 feet of the well. if there is a change in the use Of land nearby or a. new well is drilled. r . r / Those on a communal• well system! should have their water tested if a new house joins the system,. if repairs or alterations are mmde to the system and at the start up of the system, after being idle for a few mdnths. , When testing the water. Seeger said. it is .important to follow proper procedures. Any aerators, treatment devices or hoses should. be removed from the drinking water faucet: The area arounii the inside of the. faucetspout should - be disinfected with a flame .from a match or lighter, and left uptouched. Next. the tap should be turned on and left to run for two minutes,' and with the water still running, the testing bottle should be filled to its indicator line, takingcare not to touch the inside of the cap or the mouth of the bottle. Any powder or tablet inside should be kept, and not rinsed away. After replacing the cap, the bottle should be refrigerated until the saniple can be` delivered to 'the' -iappropriate drop off location. • - ' » - Yee warned that water filteringdevices such as Brita filters are not an effective 'solution in /removing. bacteria ••and should not be used to clean contaminated water. "Only clean water should be put into those filters," he said.
