Town looking to hospital for leadership in fight
From Pogo 1
would be developed under the
option the county selected.
"If I had to put money on
it, it will be a 24-hour station
in Clinton," said Steffler of
her prediction of how the rest
of the situation will unfold.
Consultants were hired by
the county to study the
ambulance service and come
up with cost-effective ways to
operate the system.
Steffler said there are two
instances in the report that
refer to the possibility of
moving the Seaforth and
Clinton stations to a Highway
8 location. Later in the report,
'she said it only mentions
moving the Seaforth station
to Clinton.
Meanwhile, the Huron
Perth Hospital Partnership,
representing eight hospitals
between the two counties, and
members of area medical
communities in Huron
County, have taken a position
that ambulance services need
to be located at or near
community hospitals.
With the hospitals between
the two counties linked,
Seaforth council questioned
whether or not both counties
need to be working together
on the issue as well since all
counties are being handed
responsibility for ambulance
services by the provincial
government.
But Seaforth mayor Dave
Scott has talked with a few
reeves in Perth County and
said they aren't
communicating with Huron
County.
"It's like kids in a sandbox,
It's pretty pathetic when so
much is at stake," he said of
their inability to work
together because of issues of
control.
Deputy Reeve Bill Teall
asked whether Huron County
Council's decision had
anything to do with the fact
the county warden is from
Clinton.
With consultants coming
from outside the area, Steffler
said unless they were
repeating something they
were already being told about
the Seaforth station, the
report would not have centred
out Seaforth as the one that
would be moving, rather than
refer to either Clinton or
Seaforth.
Steffler said the warden
and county administrator had
taken the words of one
Goderich doctor to assume all
chiefs of staff at Huron
hospitals were in support of
the county decision when
there was at least a letter from
the Seaforth medical
community supporting the
hospital partnership's plan.
She also referred to a
petition from the Zurich area,
facing a similar fate as
Seaforth, with more than
1,500 signatures that was
given to the county.
"It meant nothing. It seems
to be a foregone conclusion
the way thing are going," she
said.
Teall asked how much was
being saved by making the
changes.
Steffler and Hak said what
the savings would be was not
made clear but Hak said they
didn't say there was going to
be a reduction in the number
of ambulances which was
argued as one of the largest
cost factors in operating a
service, not the facilities that
house them.
Coun. Heather Robinet
asked how much it was going
to cost them in capital to
Brodhagen Chamber of Commerce

build new facilities when the

has offered to pick up the
costs of building a new, up-
to-date station in Seaforth if
the service would stay in
town.
"They have never once said
they have a care about patient
care," said Steffler, adding, it
stands to reason there will be
some savings from going
from six bases to four under
the current option with which
the county is proceedin4'
Teal! asked what the
should be doing to 1
decision.
"If there's anything to Dc
done at this point, it's in the
hands of the doctors," she
said.
"As chair of the hospital
board, we're going to fight
for it. We're not going to let
this die," said Coun. Michael
Hak.
"It's another thing we're
losing. How much more can
we lose and still be a viable
community," he said.
Steffler said the tight has to
be lead by the hospitals.
"If they don't feel it's
worth fighting for, why
should we?" she asked. "If
they choose to do nothing
about this, we're fighting an
uphill battle."
Hak also said the fight
should be hospital driven but
,t ultimately, it should be a
on and Perth County
tion.
He said the ambulance
service needsto he
coordinated between the two
counties.
"They don't want to share
power," said Teall.
Council decided it will
offer its support to the
hospital partnership in
whatever it decides to do.
