Teachers were there to give a little push or shove
By Matt Chapman
Huron Centennial School
Dear parents, teachers,
friends, relatives and of
course my fellow graduates.
Here we are the first
graduating class of the new
millennium at Huron
Centennial.
I would, first of all, like
to say that I am honored to
have been chosen to
represent you as class
valedictorian. I hope that
my thoughts bring back
good memories and
encourage thoughts of
success for your future.
We have all waited since
we were in the Primary
Hall to be in Grade 8; so we had the.pleasurc of having
could have the back seats as teachers over, for most of
on the bus and be the oldest us, our nine years at Huron

knowledge to become the
best that we can be.
And finally to the two
secretaries •we have known,
Mrs. Cooper and Mrs.
Allen.
Thank you Mrs. Cooper
for being a mother to us
during eight of our nine
years at Huron Centennial.
For getting us icc packs
when we were hurt. For
calling home when we were
sick and even for making us
tough out our sicknesses
until bus time. You truly
were a Mom away from
Mom.
And Mrs. Allen, I don't
know if you were lucky to
have us for only one year or
maybe for some strange
reason you feel that it is
unfortunate that you did not
have us for more. Either
way, we will always
remember how you have
improved many of our
ice cold glasses. or
sometimes jugs of water or
the tipping of mattresses to
make sure we were up and
moving in thc morning. For
all the sacrifices you have
made for us, we thank you.
It is comforting to know
that we can count on you as
we continue on through
school and throughout our
lives.
And since I have more
"Thank you's" to make, I
may as well just keep at it.
To mr. Higgins. Mr.
Mount, Mr. Jewitt, our
Grade 8 teachers, Mr. Payne
and Mrs. Cooper and to all
of the other staff we have
We know when the bell is
going to go. We\ know
where everything is in the
schogl. We know all of the
teachers and we also know
things about our classmates
and what 'to expect for
them. For example, if this
were any other speech and I
'was to look over at,Ryan or
Aaron both of them would
be doing something to try to
make me laugh.
Before I go any further, I
think we all need to take
some time to 'thank our
parents. To thank them for
the patience and the
guidance they have given
us, for the values that they
have taught us, for helping
to build our self confidence
and the emotional support
that have brought us to this
stage of our lives. For the
little push or the great big
shove we sometimes
needed. And even for the

manners over this school
year. Huron Centennial
could not run nearly as
smoothly as it does without
you.
Let's now think back
over -the events which have
brought us here today.
During our nine years at
Huron Centennial we have
shared a. lot, of good times
and have created many
memories. Somc arc funny,
some serious and some I
just can't mention here
tonight!
As I look our into the
faces of my classmates, I
recall our first year here at
Huron Centennial with Mrs.
Gemmell. She gave us
pumpkins to carve from her
own garden. Do you
remember trying to take
those home on the bus? I'd
say that was quite the
accomplishment,
considering most of us
could barely get up those
monstrous bus steps. Just
try this when the pumpkin's
bigger than you are.
Kindergarten graduation
and our trip to Storybook
Gardens concluded our first
year of memories.
In Grade I, Mrs. Rock's
class did the play, "Wizard
of Oz" with their buddy
reader. Most of you in that
class were munchkins, a
few of us were flying
monkeys and still are. i

high school looms ahead. It
almost seems as if we'll be
re -living our first days of
kindergarten at St. James,
you know that big yellow
school bus...
L: But as we enter our high
school years we always have
to remember the lessons we
learned here at St. James.
D: Here's a poem by Jillian

represents the future...

we all have to
start
somewhere.
I doubt many
of us will forget
the time Kyle
sang a solo of
"You Are My
Sunshine," at
the school
talent show or
when the girls
wanted us to
play kissing tag
in Grade 2. We
hated that gave
then. We might
have got
cooties or something. What
were we thinking?
In Grade 3, we were split
into three classes, but all of
us enjoyed getting back
together for swimming
lessons.
In Grade 4, we felt the
trauma of losing our
classmate and friend,
Kristy. We all have good
memories of Kristy.
The next year, in Grade
5, we performed a play
written by Mrs. Lockwood
to celebrate Huron
Centennial's 30th
anniversary. Would anyone
here happen to remember
who the lead actor `was?
Everyone loved the
skiing trips we had through
Grades 5-7.
Grades 6, 7 and 8 started
to prepare us for High
School. We welcomed Mr.
Higgins and Mr. Mount to
or school and Mr. Payne
took us back to the '30s and
'70s in music class. We will
never forget your music,
Mr. Payne. No matter how
hard some of us will try.
Everyone loved taking time
off school to work with
some of I the latest
technological equipment at
tech 21 and not many of us
who saw it will soon forget
Mrs. Cooper's hard fought
games of one on one
basketball out in the yard.
Keep practicing Mrs.
Cooper!
This year during
speeches, we heard one of
the funniest, most
innovative ones ever. as
Brock entertained us with

Then Grade

with our
class trip to

Everyone
had a great
time
exploring
the caves,
sailing, kayaking and using
the high ropes.
I would'now like to read
to you something my
grandfather gave me for
graduating.
