Water exercise a way to focus
on `functional fitness'
As we .begin a new
century, fitness is becoming
a necessary -part of staying,
healthy.'
The focus these days is on
"Functional Fitness,
exercise with a purpose;
exercise that will help with
movements required for day
to day'activitics and for
injury prevention:
Water exercise is almost
the perfect way to condition
the body without thc stress
and impact of land exercise.
whether you need to be
more efficient around your
house or playing your
favourite sport. It's grcat'for
all ages and conditions. and
can help you train for the
sport.of life. says instructor
Drusilla Leitch.
In- water. buoyancy
provides support while
allowing minimal stress on
thc joints. Water's
resistance provides a
cardiovascular workout as
well as muscle conditioning
every time you move. The
more you push water the
more it pushes back.
In shallow -water exercise,
the bottom of the pool can
be used to "rebound," a
move for more effort. or.
can simply be used for
staying in a "comfort" zone.
If you hate doing sit ups on
land, come into the water.
Walking. jogging. rocking,.
cross country skiing and
kicking through the water,
not only work the large
motor muscles, but provides
abdominal conditioning.
When keeping good body
alignment the abdominal
muscles naturally contract
to maintain balance and
posture with • every
movement.
•In deep water the use of a
flotation " belt allows
participants to balance their
workout between "target"
conditioning, for specific
muscle groups, and large
movement for greater
flexibility without any
impact. The use of
equipment such as noodles,
webbed gloves, paddles or
bands. can be added for
variety and added resistance
to train • muscles for
effective daily or
recreational use.
The Seaforth Lions Park
and Pool will be offering
aquafitness - classes
beginning July 3.
Classes include: shallow
water/noodle classes at
noon on Mondays and
Wednesdays; deep/shallow
combo classes on Tuesday
at 7:15 p.m. All classes
will be conducted by
Drusilla Leitch, Speedo

Certified Trainer and
Assessor. For information ..
