Strawberry social leads June activities
Our residents' families and
friends enjoyed our
strawberry social in June.
Shortcake with fresh
strawberries was good. It
was well deserved for our
residents after they had
cleaned, hulled and cut up
the berries.
Our male residents
enjoyed a Father's Day
barbecue with Dr. Woldnik.
They had freshly barbecued
burgers and beverages on the
patio.
Pub and pizza night was a
huge success. Everyone
enjoyed a pizza slice or two.
Needless to say, there
wasn't much pizza left.
We welcome two new
residents, Wilhelm Hany'and
Eunice Garrard.
On June 23, some of our
residents and staff went on a
picnic to the Goderich beach.
It was a gorgeous day. We

Alternative education
program being expanded
An alternative education
program for students over 16
at risk of dropping out of
school that began in Clinton's
Central Huron Secondary
School, had a successful year
in Listowel, Stratford and
Goderich and will now be
expanded to Wingham.
Trustees of the Avon
Maitland District School
Board heard at last week's
meeting from superintendent
Bill Gerth that the program
enrolled 130 students who
achieved 222 credits, with 16
students completing their
secondary school diploma.
"The program was a
wonderful success which
made a very real difference in
the lives of students who
would not have been in our
secondary schools
otherwise," he said.

LLUGJLLI) about grief recovery*
r..r.i.g akm to eye with grief
Q. My child drowned at our lakeside summer cottage. My
whole family meets there every vacation but i can't face
going back to the place where this tragedy happened. is that
wrong?
A. None of your feelings are "wrong". We all seem to have
trouble going back to the place we last saw our loved one alive,
whether it's a hospital, an accident scene or a particular room
at home. I'd rather see you face the scene where your child
drowned with people around you who will be loving and
supportive. it may bring pain, but it can be dealt with by
expressing it.

Surprise
farewell held
for Walton's
Betty. McCall
It was 53 years ago
when Betty McCall was
brought to the farm on the
ninth concession, Morris,
as a bride.
She has been busy ever
since, being involved with
the Walton community as
a member of the United
Church Women, a
Women's Institute member
and an active member of
Duff's United Church.
For more than 20 years,
she wrote the Walton news
for the local papers.
Betty recently moved to
Maple Villa Apartments in
Brussels.
On June 17, 60
neighbours and friends
gathered at Phyllis and
Emerson Mitchell's to
honour Betty. ,
She was treated to a
pork chop barbecue.
cooked by Gordon
Mitchell and friend tan
McMillan of St.
Catharines. The meal was
topped off with potluck
desserts.
After the meal, Margery
Huether called Betty to the
front and read to her a
poem she had composed.
telling of the good times
they had through the years.
Phyllis said what a great
friend and neighbour Betty
had been and wished her
well. She presented Betty
with a necklace and gift
certificate.
Betty thanked everyone
for the gifts and pleasant
surprise which had been
kept a secret from Betty.
