project but the cake (a viable
student population) has to
come before the icing (the
complex). And, we need a
commitment from the board -
that they will do what they
can t make it a viable high
school," he says.
Johnston presented -to the -
board in April of 1999 the
committee's plans for a 100
by 150 foot fitness complex
• to be built on SDHS property,
including an indoor track. a
portable gym floor, a dance
studio, squash courts. a
weight room. .change rooms.
offices and storage space.
When the committee asked
the board to pay two-thirds of
the maintenance costs - about .
513.000 a year - of the.
5700,000 complex. it was
tumed down by a letter from
education director Lorne-
Rachlis.
Any further discussion was
put on hold when SDHS was
listed forpossible closure last:
November. But. with the
recent ruling of a divisional
court that the board's closure
process was unfair, the
complex could again.become
part of a community plan t
keep the high school open.
Johnston says that students
contemplating which -high
-school they will attend in
September also need to know
that.they must .continue .to
attend in Seaforth if any
improvements can be made
to the school.
"When talking to students
abput'coming here.1 say that
we need them here before we
can do anything." he says..
Johnston suggests that
allowing Seaforth to be the
only high school. in. the
district to remain a
semestered school in
September to allow students
who only need a few credits
to complete their high school
education would be one way
to boost enrolment.- • • . •
The board voted earlier in
the- year to' desemester- high
schools throughout the
district in September.
Johnston says that while a
fitness complex may be
possible in Seaforth even if
the high school eventually
closes. the continued
existence of a high school
would help to make a
complex more successful
since it would ensure usage
during the school day..
"To get real use of the
complex during the day. we
need -an influx of students."
he says.
