still expect to have enough

grant application is approved.
"I'm really. thrilled. It's a

The committee raised

Clerical staff, education assistants
in position to strike today
By Scott Hiigendorft•Expositor 'Editor
Negotiations continued at press time
yesterday toward averting a strike by Avon
Maitland. District School Board's office,

assistants.
The board and staff have been negotiating
-since fast -June -moi since -Monday, -the -staff.
members of the Ontario Secondary. School
Teachers' Federation. were in a position to.•
strike or be locked out. .
While the board had cohtingency plans in
place for a Monday strike, the District 8
OSSTF agreed late last. week that no strike
action would take place before today.
Wednesday. May 10.
While the OSSTF would make no further
comment on the issue until after yesterday's
meeting, Mary -Jane Karkheck, president of
the bargaining unit. said earlier the board is
refusing to treat this group of employees the
same way it has reached contracts•with
teachers, custodians and administration.
She said the other groups and the board
agreed to reasonable salary scales. benefit
packages and working conditions since the
amalgamation of.Huron and Penh Counties
school boards into the Avon Maitland Board
almost two years ago. '
"We are the workers who assist students
with special needs. We are the workers who
'keep the school offices. libraries and
computer Iahs running. We are the workers
who get the payroll out and pay the bills. We
are tired of being treated as second class
employees. We want to be treated with the
same respect and dignity the board has shown
to its other employees during this round of
negotiations; she said. .
The group. representing more than 400
employees. hdd voted 94 per cent in favour of
sanctions against the board in February and is
now working with a mediator to try and reach
a collective agreement:. •
Jeanne Dionne. chief of human resources
for the board, said. Monday both sides were
still making progress toward a collective
agreement.
She said she's always optimistic
— negotiations -can -be -completed without. a-
strike addiflg,."Both parties are working hard.
to come to a resolution."
While she won't comment on the
negotiations. she said part of what is making
it hard to mach a collective agreement is the
amalgamation of the two boards.
She said staff from the two former . boards
have .completely different terms ,and
conditions of employment.
. It is much more complicated than a regular
set of agreements," she said.
While the results -of Tuesday's meeting
were not available at press time. Dionne said
she was_hoping a resolution, would have been
reached last night.
• A letter from Director of Education Lorne
Rachlis assures parents that if a strike occurs.
staff at schools will be doing their best to
keep programs and services operating
normally.
In the event of a strike, parents are asked to
help staff by making arrangements, when
possible,. for students to eat lunch somewhere
other than the school.
Parents are also asked to contact the school
if their children will be absent or late to
reduce the number of calls staff have to make
under the board's "safe arrival" program.
The letter also indicates some special needs
students may have their programs "modified"
during a strike.
