THE HURON EXPOSITOR, April 12, 2000-9
Toqued 'golf nuts' tried golfing Sunday despite Masters on TV
liven Augusta was blustery and cold on Saturday. Mind you
• the only white stuff floating to the ground at the Masters was
vegetation from some of thc trees along the fairways. The
players, caddies. and gallery were feeling the cold though. as
we watched them huddling against the wind. Augusta is a
tough test in the most benevolent weather. This week it was
treacherous.
Meanwhile here in the great white north. we were being
reminded that "April is the cruelest month." Thc promise of
spring was being denied as cold north winds iced up the
greens and fairways. No golfer ventured out :on Saturday
although on Sunday there were several of our local "golf nuts" •
donning mitts and toques and heading around the course.
1 think that for many, it was the ideal opportunity to get a
comfortable and warm spot in front of the television and
watch a little golf. We Canadians were keen. Our man, Mike.
Tartan chameleon
had defied all odds and made the cut in
his first Masters appearance. Then on Saturday he had a great
round getting himself on to the first 'page of the leader board
and giving us all something to cheer about. The fact that we
never actually saw Mikehit a shot on either Saturday or
Sunday says much more about the televised coverage of golf
than it does about the talent of our Canadian entry. No matter,
I'll save that for another column.
Mike played very well and ended up in a tie for 28th. He
actually played extremely well in very tough conditions tin
Saturday. but struggled on Sunday shooting a 78. The tic fur
28th will mean that Mike will have to play his way into the
Masters again in 2(X)1. The top 16 finishers at the event arc
automatically invited to the next year's do. fin confident that
Mike will be there one wayor another and whether,hc makes
the cameraman's cyc or not, we'll be cheering. •
Winner of the Masters pool was not available at the time of
this writing and will be announced next week. -
