In brief
Residents
urged
to be sure
they have
visible
house
numbers
Town staff are urging
people to make sure they
have clearly visible house
numbers.
With concerns about
Y2K and the coming 911
system, the town wants to
be,sure everyone's homes
can be identified. •
"For emergency
vehicles ,to locate their
places, they should have
a house- numberin a
conspicuous place," said
Administrator Jack
McLachlan.
As the town prepared
an emergency plan in the
event there are any
complications from Y2K,
they realized some homes
were not easily identified
with house numbers.
The concern. as Jan. 1.
2000 approaches, is that a
potential computer 'glitch
could cause power or
communication
disruptions.
While the town. is -not
expecting any serious
problems, they are still
stressing the need to be
ready, just in case. The
plan that has been put in
place is also there for any
other type of emergency.
such as an ice storm or
other weather emergency
that causes the
community to• need .help
or shelter.
Coupled with the soon -
to -be -ready 911
emergency system,
McLachlan said it's
important every home be
identified with a number.
Once 911 is in place. if
a person calls for help,
'the operator at the other
end of the line will have
a display that gives the
caller's address, but
without visible house
numbers, it will cause
delays for emergency
vehicles trying to locate
that home.
McLachlan said any
style of numbering is
fine, "as long as they're
put where it's obvious
and it can be read from
the street."
