However. the _greatest requirement is for winter wear in the 4.'5 and 6x children's size range, Bilcke said. "We did not meet the need (in this area( last year." • Bilcke. is optimistic that this year. with more community involvement and exposure. the drive will -be a success, but public support is still sought by the agency. "These are -very .expensive items," said Bilcke. "Often (others• families have (extra( coats that are in.good shape. We would like to place them with families that- need them." Donating coats is the not the only waythat community. members can get involved. Bilcke stated that the United Way must sort the'coats, check for damages and hang them up. all of which•takes volunteer energy to• be completed. •The distribution of the collection will he handled.hy the Mason's. the OPP and thc United Way. Bilcke said that employing this manner will ensure the privacy of the families will not be compromised, as it is a top priority. Assistance can he given to thc project by simply notifying a family in need about the project. she added. But the campaign's' success is heavily dependent on donations of winter wear. Many community businesses and agencies have become involved with the project by volunteering to be drop-off points. Clinton Cleaners. Blue Water Cleaners in Goderich. Exeter Cleaning Centre; Keep -U -Neat Cleaners and the Scaforth Manor in Seaforth as well as thc Clinton 'Community Cooperative Childcare Centre Clinton Public School Resource Centre and North Street United Church in Goderich have all been designated as drop-off centres for the campaign. Coworkers started a ball team and lbhn played catcher, using a coworker to run for him when he was at bat so he could keep playing on thc team. His whole condition has made solving the mystery complicated. " Since he was 21. he has had dem_ yelinating disease, a condition that affects the, nervous system and leaves John unable to sense certain kinds of pain.. For example, he may not feel the heat of a coffeepot on his hand. .There was concern this might have somehow ted to the 'cardiomyopathy but no links have been found. And while it may be contributing to it. it could also he• the reason why John doesn't feel as much pain from his heart. as doctors are sure he should he feeling. While trying to determine what was wrong, doctors discovered in a stress test that his heart was working like that of an 80 -year-old while the heart monitors showed no trouble. At a Lindon hospital, they double checked that no other ."John Chambers" had taken any other of the same tests as John that day to be sure they weren't getting the results confused. Both his grandparents and parents have had heart conditions hut each one of those was different and doesn't shed any light on John's worsening situation. "It's very scary." said Kim about the waitto find out what's wrong. They want to keep his heart functioning es . long. as possible before going fora transplant but no matter what. he is eventually going to need a new heart. "While I've got some time: they can do their investigations." he said. adding his health and Seaforth Hospital gets new physio equipment • The Blue Jays have one. the, Leats• have one and now, Seaforth Community Hospital has one. Donated by the hospital auxiliary and worth 54,200. the Excel is a state-of-the-art machine that combines ultrasound and electrotherapy for patients in the hospital's physiotherapy department. "We just love it," says SCH physiotherapist Paula Leslie. "It's used by professional sports teams to heal injuries but it can also. be used to heal occupational injuries. for joint .replacement therapy and to stimulate muscles after surgery and casts," she says. The new machine can treat two patients at the same time. decreasing waiting tithes for patients and does the job of three different older machines at the hospital ., "It's an updating of what we have - a really nice update." says Leslie. She adds that the technology is more refined and more accurate since a safety mechanism on thc ultrasound wand shuts off the sound waves if the wand.is not directly on the skin. That way. the patient gets the full amount of therapy set on the timer. Hospital auxiliary member Ariel Wood. of Egmondville. says the funds for the new machine were raised at last year's tree of lights fundraiser and penny sale proceeds. "We couldn't get by without community support.'" says Leslie. "Technology's expensive and donations become more and more important as government funding decreases." • Susan Hundartmark photo Ariel Wood, of Egmondville receives physiotherapy on her knee from physiotherapist Paulo Leslie using the new 54,200 machine the hospital auxiliary donated 10 Seoforth Community Hospital. circumstances should put him ha's created an- awareness of at the -top of the list when •the .organ donation: time comes fora ncw.hcart. •-Once you go through this.
