BR and E committee hopes to revive town's Friday night tradition By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Staff Friday night in Seaforth, during the mid- to late -50s, was the night to go downtown, mix and mingle with friends and neighbors and get your shopping done, remembers Seaforth administrator Jack 7vlcLachlin. And. it's in the hopes of reviving that sort of excitement downtown that the Seaforth Business Retenslon and Expansion committee is looking at offering entertainment downtown and an outdoor farmers'and flea market on Gouinlock Street every Friday night from Victoria Day to Labour Day. The idea, which must still go to town council and the local Business Improvement Area (BIA), would hinge on the willingness of downtown merchants to .stay open Friday evenings during the summer months, says committee member Gwen Devereaux. "We realize we're getting a lot more tourist traffice but we need something to capture them here and to draw people from other areas.," she says. "It would be great for local people too." McLachlin says he remembers his excursions into downtown Seaforth during the 50s as "a special treat." "Everybody used to come into town and the shops were open until 9 or 10 p.m. and everyone got to know their neighbours. There was a lot of conversation. It used to be a community thing one night a week," he says. "We want to get that back and find a reason to bring people downtown." adds deputy -clerk Cathy Garrick.
