Straight Talk From
THE
BUSINESS
DocToF
Your Business Is A Factory
Ask yourself why you hired
that'nes front line sales
associate. What is their pn
maty function`' Why arc
they here''. What should
their key focus be? (If you
have difficulty' with the
question consider the prob-
lem the new associate is
going to have!)
If your answ4is. "I"hired •
them to look after cus-
tomers", that isn't good
enough. That answer is too
vague. it is capable of being
translated a dozen different
ways by a dozen different
associates. Another answer
might be, "I hired them to
make me more profitable".
Now, I like that answer a lot
better but it is still too
vag lee: - . -"- .
The problem with many
organizations is the lack of a
primary'unifted focus. A sin-
gle clear focus held in the
minds of all the associates
Minimizes the energy that is
wasted and !Maximizes the
returns for both the 'company
and the associates. A cleat
focus provides a frames ork
for analyzing everything that
is done within the organiza-
tion. it provides a route map
for everyone and•every
department to follow. A busi-
ness maximizes its capacity
to produce and survive when
all associates hold exactly
the same focus.
Think of your business as a
factory. All the assets you .
have brought together within
this factory (the inventory,
the services, the people, etc)
you have accumulated to
produce a single product. If
you produce that product
well you will sur' rye and
become more profitable, It
. you produce the product
poorly you will fail

strategies only get the cus-.
tomer to buy something
today. Short.term strategics
create short-term customers..
Cenainly immediate sales

But think about what focus-
ing your people on creating
long term returning (Ms-
tumers does. It generates
immediate sales land profits)
and also. more importantly, .
brings the customer back
again and again. -
So don't ask your associates
why they are here. • Tell .
them. They are looking to
you for guidance. "You are
here to create long-term
returning customers. If you
can't do that, then I don't
need you."
