Colu Church basement 1: was full Friday ;= evening as local. people gathered to celebrate the year-end, final wrap-up for the St. Columban Minor Soccer. The 'St. Columban Sr. Two team. coached •bv Kevin Ryan and Dennis O'Reilly finished .. first .in league playoffs and are the senior champs.. This team is comprised of 14. 15 and 16 -year-olds. The Albert Boven Memorial - Award for volunteer work was presented to • Mary Ann Verberne. -The. Mike Coyne' Memorial Award fora senior player showing leadership and .sportsmanship was presented to Adam Ryan. The the social. the different. teams were presented and each coach introduced their players. The St. Columban Soccer Association includes 16 minor teams as well as two men's and two women's teams. There is a great need for coaches as more than 280 youth were registered this past year. The present committee has worked hard work on behalf of the minor soccer. The Sr. Columban Men's First Division soccer team played an exciting game this past weekend against London Latinos. with whom they shared fourth place. Down i.0 at the half. St. Columban came out strong and scored four unanswered goals for a 4-1 win and sole possession of fourth place, only two points out of third. Credit is given to outstanding playing by the defensive core, tight netminding by Jason Murray and the entire team's hustle after the half. St. Columban goals were scored by Mark Muir. Steve Rvan: Kevin Meidinger and Wayne Rvan. The St. Columban Mens' Recreation League team wiped out Brussels with an 8-1 win earlier this week. Bill Ryan. Blaine Doran and Brent Hulley each scored twice while singles were chalked up by Bruce - Griffen and Martin Wynja-. This same team travelled to Winfrham on Sunday for the playoff championship tournament. In the first game. St. Columban defeated . Wingham 1-0. Blaine Doran scored the game's only goal by outhustling Wingham's • goaltender with a wide angle shot.during the final four minutes of the game. In the finals. St. Columban defeated • Goderich. 1-0 with a'goal by.. James Dick for a corner kick delivered by Bill Ryan. Scott Henderson, who is the goalie for the St. Columban team. was voted MVP for recording two shutouts in the championship tournament.
