Student has bug -eating experience
Sarah Agar attends Shad. Valley
for summer learning experiences
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Staff
Eating bugs was just one
experience Sarah Agar. of
Seaforth, had during a
whirlwind month this
summer. -
Living for a month on
ahout'four hours of sleep a
night. she also learned
Calculus equations. built
bridges,' ran, ,her own
business, hiked through
northern Ontario wilderness
and won a prize for building
an improved cornposter
And. she says her Jily at
Shad Valley. a learning
experience for top students
across Canada at Lakehead
University in Thunder Bay.
was one of the best months
of her life.
"There was never a boring
moment in a day. The w,hole
point, I think, was to push
yourself and see how much
you can do," she says.
The 17 -year-old student is
one of a hapdful of Seaforth
students who have attended
Shad Valley since it began in
the early 1980s. Out of 1000
applicants across •the country
to apply last fall. she was one
of 450 to he accepted. She
waited until early April to
receive the news.
"It --was a pretty
intimidating process." she
says.
Also intimidating was the
first day at Shad Valley when
she learned how demanding
her schedule would he.
Structured time lasted from
from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
each day but various projects
kept participants up to 3 and
4 a.m. many nights.
"I was having so much fun
- when I was there that I didn't
realize how tired I was. But.
on the 18 -hour drive home. 1
slept for about 16 hours and I
usually can't sleep in' a
moving vehicle." she says.
Days were filled with
lectures and field trips on a
variety of subjects such as
science. mathematics,
engineering. computer
science, law and the
environment.
The intellectual activity
was balanced by lots of
physical activity in the form
of hikes and classes on Latin
dancing. kung fu. tai chi,
yoga and fitness.
One of the lectures that
pushed Sarah past her limits
was one on insects. which
culminated with an insect
cooking class. She found she
could cat the cricket
chocolate chip cookies with
little difficulty but the
mealworm stir fry was more
than she could stomach.
"Eating bugs is something
I'll never do again'. The
crickets tasted sort of like
sunflower seeds but the
mealworms were just gross,"
she says.
To encourage
entrepreneurship. students
were expected to run a
business for the whole month
to earn spending money and
pay for their expenses.
Sarah's group sold snack

food and film at /lectures
while others sold t -shirts or
pizza.
Many of the activities
prepared students to work on
a project that would compete
in..the Royal Bank Shad Cup
Challenge, which Sarah's
group ended up winning.
The project 'involved
creating and marketing a
product that improves the
environment. Sarah's group
built an 'easy -access
compostcr with a crank that
turns the compost inside and
a drawer at the bottom where
the finished compost can be
removed.
":We haven't really had any
time to test it but we assume
it will work. We figured more
people will compost if it's
easier to do it," she says.
The idea came from one of
Sarah's teammates who
Complained he was never
able to get his compost to rot
properly because there was
too little room in the
compostcr to turn it.
With the help of her father,
Sarah and two teammates
recently built a prototype
which they'll take to -the
national competition at the
Toronto Science Centre Sept:
3; where the nine Shad
Valley campuses from ;across
Canada will compete.
Since she's returned, Sarah
has been receiving 12 to 20
e-mails a day from the
friends she made at Shad
Valley from across Canada.
She says one of Shad
Vallrry's biggest strengths is
how it brings together all the
high -achieving students who
share the same interests.
"At school, I'm considered
as being smart, a browner or
the one to heat but
everybody there had gotten
that kind of teasing. We were
all on the same level and t
think that was great. It didn't
matter there - it was okay
there to struggle or to not
understand something. That's
why we really clicked.." she
says.
While she arrived at Shad
Valley thinking she'd like to
become a doctor someday.
Sarah says she,really enjoyed
the lectures on engineering
and may change her
direction. _
"I went to Shad Valley
hoping it might help me
figure out what I want to do
but it's done the opposite.
