The Huron Expositor, 1999-04-14, Page 7Seaforth golf fans watch sunny Masters
on TV while snowflakes fall outside
By Carolanne Doig.
It was a perfect Masters
Sunday. While golf fans
basked in the Augusta
sunshine and those striving
' for .the "Green Jacket"
- sweated out the, finishing. .
holes, we Canadian golf fans
huddled in front - of
televisions and fireplaces to
watch the -official harbinger
of spring. the Masters, unfold
before us. The howling,
winds and giant snowflakes
gave us a' guilt free
opportunity to follow shot
after shot, cheering and
-groaning our way through the
. back nine as though we were
-there-
The first PGA Tour major
of the year has long been the
signal that the golf season in
• our part of the country is
here. In recent years we have
been: fortunate enough,
weather-wise, to be able to
play before the Masters. Golf
_. courses throughout
southwestern Ontario have
been open since the last week
of March and many of our
local players have taken
advantage of this by -visiting
- courses around the area to'
get their first game of golf
under their belts.
The dry ending to 1998 and
reduced precipitation during
• the winter -means that many
courses are much drier -than
they usually are at this time
of -year: As a result- the -fldgs
have gone in early and same
places are even allowing'
power carts on the course.'
• Now -is the time of year to
•think about setting some
golfing goals for the season.
Just as Olazabal. Norman
and Love III have their sights.
set on a green jawket, you can
.set some attainable goals that -
will encourage you to play.
the game with more energy,
focus and satisfaction. The
great thing about golf is that
everyone's_ goals can be'
• different.- Golf is an
individual game, yet
everyone: enjoys seeing
someofte else's success.
Perhaps you're thinking of
taking up th gameand want
to visit a prctice facility or
driving range_ to hit some
balls and see how you like it.
Maybe you have played a
• few "times and have caught -
the golfing 'bug. Now- you'd
like to get a starter set of
clubs and take some lessons.
You may already he a keen
. player with an established
handicap and this is the ,year
you want to break 1(X), or•90,
or 80 or..evcn•wiri a.
competitive event at your
own club or -further afield.
Any of these goals can be
aScomplished if you plan so
that golf becomeii.part of
your summer routine / -
We are fortunate in our area
to have many fine golf
courses and practice facilities
