Provincial RIDE stats
The Provincial Traffic
and Marine Safety Bureau
of the Ontario Provincial
Police recently released
• statistics for the fifth week
of the festive season's
driving initiative, for all
OPP jurisdictions in
Ontario.
During the- fifth and final
week (December 26, 1998 -
January• 2, 1999) of the
five -weds RIDE campaign,
a total of 69,350 vehicles
were stopped at •roadside,.
, checkpoints; 152 twelve
hour licence suspensions.
were issued and 59 persons
were charged. with alcohol-
related offences. Officers
issued 52 Administrative
Drivers Licence
suspensions.
During the 1998/99 five.
week RIDE festive season
driving initiative a total of
485,129. vehicles were
checked at roadside
checkpoints compared to •
516,900 in the' same period ,
of 1997/98. A total of 583 •
persons were' charged with.
alcohol-related driving
offences under the Criminal
Code during. the 1998/99
campaign. Over the same
period in 1997/98 620
persons were charged with
alcohol-related- driving
charges under the Criminal
Code.
During the five week
campaign, 578 persons
were issued with the.
Administrative Drivers
Licence suspension and
were immediately.
suspended from driving for
90 days. Also, 1,312
persons were issued 12
hour suspensions, down
marginally from the
1997/98 total of 1,353.
During this campaign,
total collisions increased by
seven percent from 6,290
to 6.739 in.OPP patrolled
highways. The dramatic
change in the weather over
the last two weeks of the
initiative, created' more
challenging driving
conditions which resulted
in a large increase in all
categories of collisions.
Most parts of the province
- suffered under several
major -snow storms in and
around.Christmas Day.
Unfortunately, alcohol
related collisions still'
claimed the lives of eight of
' the 67 persons killed during
the five week event.
Another 20 drivers. may
have survived if they had
been wearing seat belts. -
The_Ontario Provincial
Police reminds motorists.
that the RIDE program will
continue throughout the
year and is not limited to
holidays ."'and long -
weekends.. k
